Adirondack Jack, SASS #53440
A gunman described as a white man in his 20s openned up with an "automatic weapon" at close range during a speaking event, shooting Giffords in the head, and several others as well. Varying accounts have some dead, some injured. Giffords is said to be alive and in surgery. The gunman is in custody. Adirondack Jack, SASS #53440
Latest I can find has the shooter using a pistol (earlier said an automatic rifle), and they have found and pulled down a Facebook page with all manner of paranoid ramblings about "new currency, government surveilance" and other nonsense. Sounds like his FruitLoops had slipped out of the bowl. Obama said five dead, several injured.... Such a waste, apparently at the hands of a total nutjob. Pack Saddle Slim, SASS #73122
One of the victims who lost her life was a little nine-year old girl who was there at the store shopping with her mother. He also killed a federal judge, which warrants the death penalty. I hate it when they call this low-life the "alleged assailant." There's no "alleged" to it. There's no doubt about it...he did it. The thing that burns me, though, is that we will be paying for his keep for months, if not years. They should just cut through the red tape and execute the guy this evening. I'm hearing reports that there was a person in the crowd who had a CCW and opened fire on the assailant. Didn't hear whether or not he hit him. Brasspounder, SASS #9076
Been watching the Fox News coverage on this all day... Much is being made of the fact that Arizona allows folks to carry guns concealed.. That fact is totally irrevelant in this case.... This tragedy was committed at the hand of a pretty obvious nut case and whatever laws may or may not have been in effect as to the carryying of weapons would have had nothing at all to do with the outcome. Anyone bent on committing such mayhem is not going to be deterred by any laws or rules on the books. We need to keep our eyes firmly focused on "legislative processes" even more now than before. Grouchy Greg, SASS#71981
I didn't know a thing about this shooting until I got back from the gun show in Richmond and stopping by Bass Pro. The media spin on this tragedy will predictably be anti-gun, anti-gun owner, and anti-Second Amendment, except for FoxNews. Fox is the only real voice of sanity out there anymore. You can bet the Sunday morning talking heads on the liberal left-controlled alphabet networks will be all atwitter, placing the blame on guns, gun owners and pro-gun politicians. There will of course be a new push by the liberal left for "common sense gun control laws", whatever that is. As for the gun show at The Showplace, it had one of the biggest gun show crowds I've seen there since right after Obama got elected. Tons of guns, accessories, ammo, and components, and less non-gun stuff than they normally have. WLP primers were $27 a brick. Thanks to falling primer prices at shows and the Bass Pro gift cards I got for Christmas, I am stocked with enough reloading supplies to keep me going for 3 or 4 years at least. Texas Man
May God be with those who lost loved ones and also with the ones who survived. This is America at its worst or should I say one Punk with a gun in his hand. We as gun owners can expect the general "If we banded all guns and if we past another law and so fourth". The news said the congress lady was specking before and after sugry and this is a good sign. She reportly was hit in the temple and the bullet come out the other side towards the front of her head. I know one ask what they could have done or should do it the future to prevent something like this from happing and in reality You cannot do anything most of the time once the gun is on the person and they plan on using it. I have just about learned to trust no one and those who are acting strange or nervous I watch damn close. Shiftty eyes and hidden hands are starting points and anyone pushing his way around thur other people or a big mouth going are signs as well as a person who is looking at someone like trying to study them like what do they think that person would react kind of thing. You just never know who is standing next to You but One Thing is Certian and that is once they go over the edge You better be ready to deal with them. I heard a report that a CCP holder may have helped after the shooting started and if that is the case I sure hope none of His bullets hit anyone. As a CCP holder that is one think You have to concider should you get involved. Today is a sad day and as Lefty said the Judge was a fine man and as for the little nine year old its a shame she died so young. Years ago here in Texas We would know how to deal with a guy like the shooter,,Mury Pronto. I beleave he will get whats coming to him, It will just take a while longer. Based on his criminal record he was a petty criminal and according to his You-Tube videos he was paranoid, delusional, twit. (Fox News) Loughner's page on YouTube lists Tucson as his hometown. He also said he attended Northwest Aztec College and Pima County Community College. And in one of the videos, he says he is a military recruit. But an Army official told Fox News Loughner attempted to enlist in the Army in December 2008 but was denied. Doc Coles SASS 1188
This is just about the worst things that could happen at the moment (it could only be worse if some idiot tried to shoot the president). Just when gun rights are gaining strength, some nut job espousing (extreme) right wing ideas has to shoot a bunch of people because he does not like a Democratic Congresswoman's politics. There has been far too much wild political rhetoric of late and a related rash of threats and attempts at violence against Democratic law makers (several folks have been arrested for making threats or planning murder, though it has not made a big splash in the news). One of the things that makes America great is the concept of "loyal opposition," where no matter how much we disagree with someone's politics, we respect the system and people's right to hold their own opinions. When we loose that and start shooting each other because of political disputes, we might as well be Iraq or some other s*#@hole. No matter how much you disagree with someone, we are all Americans. No one deserves to die for their political views. God help all those wounded, the families of the dead and the United States. A very sad an disgusting day. Doc, I COMPLETELY CONCUR on the loyal opposition point and your other comments at the end of the paragraph. I served 14 years on active duty and 20 in the reserves to protect our constitution, and all of our rights including peaceful free speech. I also agree that we second amendment supporters do not need this at this particular moment. However, we should not join the first of those to lob the as yet totally unproven political rhetoric garbage in on this: "some nut job espousing (extreme) right wing ideas". How about we wait and see what the whole picture on this guy is BEFORE we jump to the same conclusions (with incomplete info) as all the left wing blogs in today's "instant assessment & conclusion" society? From everything so far, this guy was a pot smoking, fringe insane, petty criminal, but even that is far too early to judge. He may evenget off for insanity. We'll just have to see as much more comes out over time. Just heard Congresswoman Giffords is now responsive - God Bless. Doc Coles SASS 1188
Harvey; Yeah, we will see what comes out, but it don't look good. Its fairly clear even at this point, that it was a politically motivated act; at least he targeted her because she was a Congresswoman and he disagreed with her views. I am in no way saying that his views or acts represent the republican party or tea party, I am just saying it would be good to tone down the political "war" rhetoric. Some idiots (like this one) are bound to take it too seriously.

Some idiots (like this one) are bound to take it too seriously. Do not agree - too quick judgment without enough facts. Certainly she is a public figure and that makes her a visible figurehead for something, but not necessarily in terms of left/right, or republican/democrat. No one know for sure what motivates one like this (especially this early), much less if he is insane. From what I've read of his posts, he is all over the map. Only ONE PERSON is responsible for our actions and that is the one looking back in the mirror. I'm a little fed up with the lack of personal responsibility in our society today and the garbage that someone else has to be at fault. That said, clear fomenting of violence is not acceptable. Just heard the first calls on a couple networks for increased gun control based on the fact that "this guy was obviously insane, but could just walk in and buy & carry a gun in AZ." The second amendment repercussions are what I fear here.. Harvey Off to bed for some shuteye before 5AM flight to the font of all wisdom - Washington DC.
