Pat Riot Posted March 15 Posted March 15 (edited) I have damn near had it with Apple and iPhones. Ever since Covid started they screw up one thing after another and I am sick of it. I find it odd that after I find one more thing they totally screwed up I see there’s a new software update coming, so I wait and see if that update fixes the problem. It used to be that it did. Now not only does it not fix the problem it just adds more. There was a recent update. Today I find you cannot do a search within Photos for anything. I was searching for rifle photos, in particular one that shows when I mounted a certain scope to a certain rifle. No can do. Search doesn’t work for anything. I see there’s a new update tonight. Probably ANOTHER security update where they hide more convenient options from their customers. Enough ranting. Anyone know any options besides Apple IPhones or Google / Microsoft / Android options. I despise anything Google related. Oh, and DON’t say flip phone (dumb phone). If you do I will fart in your general direction and post photos of your secret crush. Texas Joker Posted March 15 Posted March 15 You may want to look at a Huawei device. They have their own OS. Blackberry? But apple, Microsoft, and Android are 90% of market share as least 1 Quote
JD Lud Posted March 15 Posted March 15 (edited) Don’t get one made by Israeli companies I actually had never tried the search feature in photos and just did…selected Rifle and boom most of them popped up. having gone to Apple from other products, my belief is the Apple ecosystem is the reason to continue. If you don’t have iPads, Mac, etc then easy to break and switch….but I don’t think it’s better. i believe there is reason Apple phones dominate in the US market with around 58% market share Edited March 15 by JD Lud 2 Quote

I have the IPhone 15 (?) that my son gave me after he updated to a 16. Works great. I had a smaller older IPhone and it was becoming a little weird but nothing like you’re experiencing. Maybe a new IPhone? 2 Quote
J-BAR #18287 Posted March 15 Posted March 15 Until reading all this, I had never tried using the search function in my iPhone. it was hit and miss. Guess I will just continue scrolling through the whole collection if am trying to find a particular photo. I delete a lot of old pix to keep the volume to a reasonable size, and back my phone up to my laptop a few times a year, so scrolling through them isn't all that time consuming. Good luck with your search for an alternative. 1 Quote
John Kloehr Posted March 15 Posted March 15 I'm still running iOS 17 (latest update) on my iPhone, version 18 has AI features I don't want to run at this time even though my phone is too old to run most of them. This major upgrade (now at 18.3.2) also changes many things like the calculator. Quote
Chicken Rustler, SASS #26680 Posted March 15 Posted March 15 Is your phone new enough to have AI? Even without that there was a big change in the photos app and that brings up the biggest problem with Apple or really any new devices. They're always gonna be upgraded to do things better if you do it the way kids do everything now and not the way we've always done it. Still, you might be able to use the new app instead of changing phones, this is only secondhand info but you can try it while you're looking for other phone alternatives. I heard that with the new photos app it wants to re-index everything and that affects searches, and it will only do it when you're plugged in and it can take a long time. You could try starting a search and leaving it plugged in overnight and see if it learns how to search the way you want it to. If you find another good choice for a phone let us know. Quote
Leroy Luck Posted March 15 Posted March 15 No clue which iPhone you have, but the photo search is still available on mine. The 16 Pro. 1 Quote
Sgt. C.J. Sabre, SASS #46770 Posted March 15 Posted March 15 Not that it helps here, but I save all my pics on my computer. The only pics I have on my phone are the ones to make sure I get the right product at Walmart. 1 Quote
Stump Water Posted March 15 Posted March 15 I despise anything Apple, but that's another story. Although the most prolific version of the Android OS is developed by Google, it is possible to run an Android device not integrated with everything else Google (search engine, photos, Gmail, etc.) Just now, Cypress Sun said: They all suck. Good luck. You're not wrong. Quote

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head. Thank you. I have looked and looked for an alternative. If I lived in Europe or Asia there are lots of options. Not so much here. ————————————————— Well, Pards, I think I am just going to have to live with the iPhone. I think I will join one of their forums and try to voice my concerns and see if anything changes. Though I think it would just be more aggravation. Funny story: A couple of years ago I submitted a complaint with a request for a change after an update. I actually got a response saying “Post your concerns with our community. Maybe someone there can help you.” So I did. Within 24 hours I got the kind of help I expected. A bunch of snotty comments telling me to “just deal with it!” So, I did. I posted a GIF that I cannot post here of a hand with a crank on the side. The crank turns and raises the middle finger. I got about a dozen responses thanking me for the “very cool GIF” and that was it. Quote
Pat Riot Posted March 15 Author Posted March 15 Oh, I almost forgot. I want nothing to do with AI on my iPhone. iPhone 15 and higher have AI. Apple says it can be turned off. I kinda doubt it’s actually off if one turns it off. Quote
Rip Snorter Posted March 15 Posted March 15 Got along the larger part of my life without a cell phone and do so now. Had one in the car after I retired till the new phones made the car capabilities obsolete. Don't miss it! Quote

Pat Riot Posted March 17 Author Posted March 17 This is interesting. I guess my and a number of other’s complaints have been heard, regarding the photos search anyway. I downloaded the new update 18.3.2 the night before last and I can now do searches in photos and actually find what I am looking for. I haven’t tested other functions, but I am happy they fixed that. 4 1 Quote
