I could never make Jiffy-pop.  It always scorched.  And it was expensive compared to regular popcorn

A buddy of mine hung a Jiffy Pop over his bedroom doorway.

Said it was a redneck fire alarm.

I'd shake the beejeebers out of it and it still scorched.

Sounds like you had the pan too close to the burner then. It took awhile to figure it all out but they did work once you had the technique down. We even took them on camping trips and did them over the fire. It took a little longer but having popcorn on a camping trip was great, this was way before smores came along.

Boy, all of those pic's bring back memories, oddly all good memories.

I remember Ding Dongs in the foil but it really didn't matter if it was foil (or if it was the Swiss Rolls) or plastic, the chocolate icing was always stuck to the wrapper. Even the one shown...guarantee the chocolate is stuck to the foil.

The candy cigarettes that I remember actually came in a "pack". Sugar with red, food coloring red flame at the end of cigarette.

I used to get the Life Saver book at Christmas as a gift every year. I had forgotten about the Butter Rum Lifesavers, those things were gooooood.

Thanks Pat

Edit - If you don't have a favorite pan like that....You ain't a cook.

We kept our ding dongs in the frig so they wouldn't be stuck all over the wrapper, even froze them at times.

Remember Topps baseball cards with that bubble gum in it? I believe they were 5 cents a pack.

Topps still has baseball cards but I think they ditched the gum!

We occasionally got them in our lunch box. By the time lunch rolled around, the chocolate was melted to the foil/plastic, the sandwich was warm and so was the drink which was usually milk. To this day, I detest warm sandwiches (that are supposed to be cool) and warm milk.

Cracker Barrel still sells the Butter Rum lifesavers and Clove and Black Jack gum. Sometimes you can even get the candy cigarettes and bubble gum cigars.

We used the Jiffy Pop sometimes , don’t recall any problems with it. My mom preferred to make popcorn in a pan with butter most of the time.

These days I use microwave popcorn.

We took those BB Cards and a clothes pin and clipped em on our bike spokes to make those motorcycle sounds.

Next time look on the Black Jack and Clove gum to see where they’re made.

We did that too. We also used partially inflated balloons tied to the forks to make it sound like a Harley. Cheap balloons didn’t last long.

Everyone single one I have experienced. We even had the skillet until last year when it finally gave up the ghost and died on us.

We buy them at garage and estate sales.  Probably why half the things on that list are still in the house.

The local store had candy cigarettes that we rolled in our sleeve.  There were stores in the city that carried candy cigars.

@Alpo orange sherbet flavor was probably the most popular but there were multiple flavors back then.  Multiple ice cream versions have come and gone.  There are fancy ones now that are layered ice cream and cake or brownie or fruit in clear plastic.  These are great because you don't accidentally eat a piece of cardboard.  Mint_Brownie_Ice_Cream_Push_Up_Pops.jpgSmarties-Push-Up-Lolly.jpg

Black Jack, Beemans, Clove and Teaberry gum is currently owned by Gerrit J. Verburg Company. They mark all their products with the country they are imported from. Looks like all the Gum is made in Morocco

Here in Nashville, we had a pretty good Rock ‘N’ Roll band named Government Cheese!

My folks would occasionally BUY a block of govt. cheese from someone who had extra!!  We didn’t need the help, (although there were times when we got pretty close) but we all LIKED the stuff!

It DID make great mac ‘n’ cheese and it was richer tasting than regular American cheese so it was great on cheeseburgers and hot ham and cheese sandwiches!!

One year our band did a TV show, for halftime. We did television theme songs - we did Hogan's Heroes and we did Sanford and Son and we did All in the Family and we did Mission Impossible. And we were formed when we did a theme song. The only one I remember is for Sanford and Son we did a pickup truck, with the tires going round. And then when we changed to a new thing, as we were marching to it we played a commercial.

We did it's the Pepsi generation, and I'd like to teach the World to sing, and you deserve a break today.

And we did Teaberry gum. We marched while playing

Di di di di dit dit, di di dit dit dit dit dit. And the entire band stops marching and did the Teaberry shuffle. Then we started marching again. I was a clarinet. That wasn't too hard. But one guy in my squad was a sousaphone and one was a bass drum. It was trippy watching those two.

I think by taste the expensive foil wrapped kraft deluxe reminds me of the gov cheese from when I was a kid.

Yep! This new old gum loses its flavor fast and gets tough to chew. Black Jack still turns your teeth black though.

I had completely forgotten about that. Thanks for the laugh.

My Grandson’s high school band did that a couple of years ago. I had forgotten it was the Teaberry Shuffle but it seemed familiar to me.

Absolutely! Mercurochrome and Bactine was all my Mom used on us in the 60’s and early 70’s. There was also something else she used on us but I am drawing a blank…Calamine Lotion. That was it.
If it itched - Calamine

If it bled - Mercurochrome

If it stung or burned - Bactine

Ah, the good old days…

Grandma used this purple spray on us.  It was the same stuff she used on the cattle for pinkeye and any cuts that looked infected.  Downside is that it took a few days to wear off.

That's what Mama used on anything that stung. Mosquito, fire ant, bumblebee, wasp. If it was really bad she'd mix up some baking soda and water and put that on it.
