Calamity Kris Posted December 25, 2017 Posted December 25, 2017 Uno and I were coming back from a wonderful birthday dinner this evening. Ahead of us was a fairly new pick-up truck not able to keep straight in the lane. On the four lane, he was getting close to the cars next to him and bouncing off the curb on the other side. I handed my phone to Uno and said lets drop a dime on this guy. He's obviously impaired. We called it in with a description of the truck, license plate, where we were headed and what we observed. They thanked us and said they would dispatch to our location. About a half mile later, the road narrowed into two lanes and it's very dark. He was starting to weave into oncoming traffic. Just then, I saw flashing blue lights rapidly approaching in my rear view mirror. As they got close, I pulled into the right turn lane to give them room to pass and catch the guy. He pulled over and we saw the officer jump out of his car. After we got home, the officer called me to take a statement as they arrested the guy and were hauling him away. I was relieved. Please be careful out there. Tis the season for more than merriment. Stay safe so you can spend many more holidays with your loved ones and us here in the Saloon.
Badger Mountain Charlie SASS #43172 Posted December 25, 2017 Posted December 25, 2017 Good for you both. You have given the person a second chance. What they do with it is up to them.

Four-Eyed Buck,SASS #14795 Posted December 25, 2017 Posted December 25, 2017 Oh yeah, we won't be going anywhere on new Year's Eve. Too much bad juju on that night
Three Foot Johnson Posted December 25, 2017 Posted December 25, 2017 My oldest daughter was run over and killed by a drunk driver in her own front yard on May 4th, 1981 outside of Oak Harbor, WA. She was 21 months old. I have -0- tolerance for impaired drivers, and reading about somebody arrested for 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th offense DUI (or even more) makes my blood boil.

DocWard Posted December 25, 2017 Posted December 25, 2017 Lost two of my fraternity brothers, same pledge class, to a drunk driver. Thanks for caring enough to call.

My heart breaks for you. Down the dark two lane road are several churches, a number of which were holding Christmas Eve services. The possibilities of what could happen were racing through my head as we were on the phone with the police. I'm glad it didn't end that way.

I remember seeing this fella stopped half in the parking lane and half in the s/bound lane of one of the major streets in our city. I waited for a minute to see if he was just adjusting his seat or something. He wasn’t moving, so I turned on my lights and went up to the driver’s door where I saw him slumped over the wheel with his foot on the brake and the car in drive. I shut off the ignition, got it in park and pulled him out and arrested him. My arrest turned out to be his 7th felony arrest for DWI. He was 70 years old at the time. At the arraignment the next day, I walked in to court and his entire family was there. They were all looking daggers at me like I did something wrong. He had a high- powered attorney that got him a low bail, and that was the last I heard of the case. Hope he got some help before he killed himself or someone else...
Smoken D Posted December 25, 2017 Posted December 25, 2017 I can't thank you enough for making the call. In my 29 1/2 years in L.E. only had one fatal on Christmas Eve. Was 4 drunk teens one of which was a city counselor's son. Also kinda ruin my Christmas having to make death notification to 4 family's. I'll just leave it at that.
Cold Lake Kid, SASS # 51474 Posted December 26, 2017 Posted December 26, 2017 Thank-you for being responsible and not taking the "None of my business" attitude prevalent in some.
Widder, SASS #59054 Posted December 26, 2017 Posted December 26, 2017 Ya dun gud, Kris. When my wife was 7, her mother was killed in a car wreck on Christmas Eve... and her dad was injured. Details was that another oncoming vehicle crossed into their path and they swerved to miss it. Her parents hit a concrete bridge abutment and her mom died instantly. And part of the sadness in all this is that my wife's B'day is Dec 27th. Needless to say, this time of year is sometimes a little somber for my Wife. Indeed, you did right. Thank you. ..........Widder
Lawdog Dago Dom Posted December 26, 2017 Posted December 26, 2017 J Bar Binks- so,so sorry to hear of your loss. I can only imagine the pain. And to Smoken D; I hated death notifications. In an instant your words just changed peoples lives forever, and not for the better. After a notification I always took the rest of the day off. Could not wait to get home and get out of the uniform. The other day I made a 911 call for a driver on the shoulder slumped over the steering wheel. It was on an interstate so there was no way I could circle back to him. Drunk? Heart Attack? Stroke? No idea. The dispatcher put the call out as a "motorist assist." Only sent deputies, no fire or rescue. Wanted to call back and remind them that he was slumped over the wheel, didn't have his hood open.
