Patron Saint of Cowboys?

Recommended Posts

I'm sure this has been covered before but my search through the Wire archives didn't turn up much.

Is there a patron saint of cowboys? I would like to get a metal for a watch fob. The only one I found in my Google search was Saint Anne for she is the patron saint of equestrians. Is there a patron saint of cowboys?

Howdy,

Back then they didn't have guns but they did have archery.

So one might expand the patron saint of archers to include gunslingers???

St Sebastian?

Best

St. Gabriel Possante is the patron saint of hand gunners. Well, there's a group that wants him to be anointed as the patron saint but of course the Catholic Church is anti-gun!!

Sparky, you forgot the hernia stuffers that good ole Saint Gummarus watches over.

Poor fellow, has a lousy job in the after life.

From what I read of his history, he didn't fare much better in THIS life either. Married off to a shrew of a "noble"-woman and then having to clean up the messes she made.

Who says the Catholic Church is anti-gun?!?!? There's an awful lot of untruths on and off line about the Catholic Church. I'm Catholic and have had many personal friends in the clergy. Nary a one has said anything remotely anti-gun!

St. John; Al "Fuzzy" St. John.

Since we are a movie cowboy fantasy group, who better than one of the classic sidekicks from the early days of western movies?

IMDB gives him 337 credits in his filmography (John Wayne has 178, Randolph Scott has 106).

Fuzzy worked with Bob Steele, Don "Red" Barry, George "Lone Rider" Houston, Robert "Lone Rider" Livingston, Buster Crabbe, and Lash LaRue.

An example for the young'uns in the posse:

Saint Michael covers military and law enforcement and is depicted packing a sword. " Saint Michael, Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the snares of the Devil, May God rebuke him we humbly pray. O Prince of the Heavenly host, by the Divine power, Thrust into Hell, Satan, and all evil Demons who wonder the world for the ruins of souls." He has always been one of my favorites. I was born on St. Patrick's day and he is my special saint. Irish Pat, sass 19486

The guys I shoot with think my wife is a saint for living with me. Maybe it's her?

There seem to be a lot of those showing up in cowboy shooting.

The reason I said the Church is anti-gun is they refuse to recognize St. Gabriel as the Patron Saint of Handgunners because they don't like guns! The Pope himself doesn't like guns!!! You may have friends in the clergy that are ok with guns but trust me the Vatican is anti-gun and anti-violence even when it comes to protecting yourself! Let's not get political here or this post will be pulled!!!

I don't want to make the post political, and was enjoying it until reading your statement, but you must realize you can't paint the Church or any organization or people with a broad brush an not expect to start controversy. Just as you said some individuals within the Church may not be anti-gun, know too that it's one thing for individuals within an organization to be anti-gun, but until you can provide references to Church dogma condemning guns I cannot accept your premise. The Church has long held to the concept of a just war and that naturally spills over to the right of self defense. To paraphrase a statement I saw by a Jewish rabbi "It's not only a right to defend the innocent, it's an obligation.".

That's pretty cool. Any idea what pistol(s) he used? Since it was 1860, I'm going to assume he shot the lizard with an 1851 Colt. That's my story and I'm sticking to it

The hierarchy of the church, The Vatican is anti-gun and that's why St. Gabriel will not be made the patron saint of hand gunners! What don't you understand about that?? The church will not allow a patron saint of hand gunners, period, if that;s not anti-gun then I don't know what is!!

Not all priest agree with the Pope on everything. The late Arch-Bishop of New Orleans Phillip Hannan was a priest with the 82 Airborne at the battle of the Bugle. He was paratrooper qualified. His story and boots are on display at the WWII museum in New Orleans. There is a book about him called "The Arch-Bishop wore combat boots'. In the 1960s during the second Vatican Council, he defied their intentions to ban nuclear weapons by leading the opposition to promote the morality of nuclear weapons when used as deterrents. That is probably why he never became a Cardinal. During the Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans the 82nd Airborne sent him one of their helicopters for his use. The book makes for great reading by anyone. Our local priest told me that plenty of his friends that were priest in New Orleans were armed and were not going to let their churches be destroyed by looters during Katrina. The Pope doesn't have to know everything, I hope he doesn't read the SASS wire. Irish Pat

The first handgun I ever fired was one of my uncles' .38sp snubnose revolver that he carried religiously (pun intended) ;)

He was the RC pastor/spiritual advisor for the Ft. Peck Rez. in Montana.

We were on a family picnic in the Craig Mts. of Idaho at the time (Cottonwood Butte area)

Pards please accept my apology, I feel compelled to reply one last time to Rye Miles.....

You stated: "The hierarchy of the church, The Vatican is anti-gun and that's why St. Gabriel will not be made the patron saint of hand gunners! What don't you understand about that?? The church will not allow a patron saint of hand gunners, period, if that;s not anti-gun then I don't know what is!!"

What Church document(s) emphatically state an anti-gun doctrine? Without this you're statement simply reveals a personal prejudice. As you said ... "What don't you understand about that??"

Continue posting if you must. I will offer no more rebuttals.

Cleburne, the pope has stated time and again that no Christian has a need to own a gun, and that the ownership of firearms is the reason for the violence in the world. If that is not anti-gun I don't know what is. The pope is the head of the Catholic church, and sets the policy for the entire church. Listen to what the pope says and it is quickly apparent that he is an anti-gun socialist.

Can you spell "hypocrisy"?

The Papal Swiss Guard fulfills many of the same functions as any other ARMED bodyguards for politicians and celebrities...including those who would disarm the "peasantry"

The apparent contradiction of the above opinions stems from this. The Pope can and frequently does make statements that are not necessarily official Church teaching. He is merely expressing his opinions on a variety of matters and is free to do so. He does not, and can not determine official Church Doctrines all by himself. If the current Pope holds this opinion about firearms, it is not the official Church teaching on the matter. As stated, the Church has always held to the doctrine of "Just War" which includes the right of self defense.

Really? Was an uberti or pietta? Which one is more accurate? Which one has better qc? Which one is closest to a real Colt? What other questions always crop up about the clones? If you look closely enough at the picture, I swear you can tell it's a smoke wagon
