Having had cataract surgery and now not seeming to need glasses anymore…what is a good brand and model of shooting glasses…and what kind of rating do I need to look for

Simple answer,

Hunters Gold, see https://huntershdgold.com/

Your never disappointed when you buy the best.

Personal Opine??  Hunters Gold = WAY overpriced.  Stop in to any Dunams Sports, Cabella's,  Bass Pro, etc., and brows their offerings of PolyCarbonate Shooting/Sports eye wear.  Perfectly serviceable shooting glasses for 35 Bucks.  Might even splurge all the way up to 100 Bucks.  Nah.  Wrap-a-Round PolyCarb for 35 Bucks do just fine.

Hunters gold is my personal preference. While pricy (around $400) they are in your full prescription,  With transition lenses. (Cheaper than my daily wear glasses). When shooting long range I don’t have to take off shooting glass, put on readers to adjust my sight settings.

plus I can read scenarios or other info on the range without looking for my other glasses or using my grabber to hold the paper far enough from my eyes to read it!

their glasses are very good, high quality protection for your irreplaceable eyes.

Lastly, Hunters Gold has been very supportive of SASS. I’ve been to many matches where they donated gift certificates for their product.

OMG,

Good to see you last week.

Since you no longer need prescription glasses, you have many options.

I know you participate in a variety of shooting sports so you will want to experiment with colored lenses for different applications and conditions.

I don't know if you shoot optics, but stay away from polarized lenses if you shoot a dot or hologram sight.

I would suggest starting with one of the polycarbonate wrap around shooting glasses sets with interchangeable lenses until you know what you like/want.

An example would be the Bertoni Shooting Glasses with interchangeable lenses.

After you figure things out consider buying Hunter's Gold or another premium brand.

Kat uses the Hunter's Gold.  Likes them and they have treated us well.

YMMV

Coffinmaker -

Please don’t think me argumentative. I respect your opinion and offer my perspective.

All safety glasses are NOT created equal. I wear and endorse the Hunters HD Gold glasses. I was spotting at the Virginia match Labor Day weekend and took a significant direct hit to my right eye! There is not a mark or scratch on the glasses! There is more to them than just yellow glasses. They let more light in and block the UVA UVB etc.

$375 is a lot especially if you don’t need a prescription. But WITH a prescription it’s a deal. My plain glasses from the eye doctor were over $500! I now get those from HHDG’s lab, too!

If one is patient, one of the $200 Gift Certificates can be obtained in a timely manner.

Hugs!

Scarlett

PS - the Customer Service is outstanding.

Being that the HHDG's have your full prescription in them, do (could?) they qualify then as an approved HSA item due to being then prescription eyewear?

And those gift certs give a little over 50% off.

My current WylieX glasses with a script were $400+ . HDs for $175 is a bargain I think for what ya get. Ellie's arrived yesterday.

I need to converse with them and my eye doc. I can't shoot with my everyday glasses as the focus point for a front sight is too low in the lense. I have a fixed lens for my right eye in my WylieX and may do the same for my HDs. I my regular progressive in the left. After having them in a few minutes, I don't seem to notice the lack of the right progressive. The issue I've found though, is far vision is blurry making long range targets a bit hard to see!

This year I got two pair of HD bifocals.  They remade them with a different frame when the bifocal was too low in the first pair. You pick a couple frames, they send you samples to try on and to mark the lens for your pupil location and return.  The first pair I got had no frame across the bottom of the lenses, and the bifocal was just a small spot near the bottom of the lens.  It was uncomfortable for my eyes looking that low to read something.  They said you had to get a full-frame pair if you wanted a lined bifocal and then made me another pair with those.  I still would like the bifocal line to be higher since that's what I'm used to with my regular glasses, but they are much easier to use than the first pair.  I there's some info on their website about trifocals, and putting a bifocal on top if that's what you need, etc., but I didn't pay much attention to that.

With either pair, when I put them on at the range (or anywhere), at first it seems that things are a little distorted and I don't see as good.  But after I get used to them pretty quickly.

And yeah, I used one of those certificates!  Somebody won one and didn't need it.

Hunter HD Gold for me.

That gold color makes my brass sight pop. The transition lenses are great

outside in the sun or inside a stage.

A quick hint on the HD.  Recently talked to a shooter who is wearing their red (ruby?) lenses, because well, she liked the color.  But she hates the view for cowboy, says they make dust show up the best!  I think those are designed for red-dot scopes.

Used the cheap ones for a while in the Z-87 standard until a full powered 45 fired by a wart hog shooter bounced back and hit me dead center in my left eye. Lens broke and one of the pieces laid me open about 3/8’s of an inch under the eye. Scared the bejeezus out of me. Decided my eyes deserved better and moved to Wiley-X at about $100 in non prescription. The Wiley-X (in several different colors) used with my single vision contacts worked great for a long time. Now that my eyes are in the 20-350 range AND need bi-focals to read my Wiley-x sit in the man cave unused. The Hunters Gold in my bifocal prescription are actually about $100 less than the same prescription from my optical provider.
Guess everyone has a different need and different comfort level with their personal safety.
You do you and I will do me.

The Ruby are meant for SHOTGUNNERS - shooting clays - the Ruby makes the orange show up

like crazy! If she would contact the lab in Alabama I bet they’d exchange them

for her.

I have progressive lenses without a frame across the bottom. I love them - wear progressives all the time - and I don’t notice when it changes.

Chris had me put in my order and state to make the progressive line higher so my lower section for close shooting was larger. I will get to try them out this weekend to see how well they work. Hopefully they will be good. That is what WylieX did for my current shooting glasses I have had for about 4 years.

I also talked with Ginger when down south and saw them. Chris had told me they were for shotgunners and optics shooters. They helped getting on the clay targets quicker or seeing the red dot cleaner. I conveyed this to her so wasn't sure how well they were going to do for her. I think Chris would exchange them for her if she was to get with them. My first set was wrong before I ever got to use them. The doctor has messed up my prescription and I didn't know it until I had my daily glasses done and I couldn't see well with them. Went back in and the doctor admitted to writing down the wrong prescription so I had to have my regular glasses redone and Chris redid my shooting glasses. No charge from either company to get new ones done over.

Young first time motorcycle rider asks, “How much should I spend on a helmet?”

Old grizzled biker at sales counter answers, “That depends. How much is your head worth?”

Now ask yourself, how much are your eyes worth. I’m not advocating any particular brand. I have prescription shooting glasses from WileyX. I’m simply suggesting price shouldn’t play a role in the decision.

Chris  definitely offers great advice.

Sassy and I both shoot in golds but I find the blue helps bring out lettering inside vehicle so I like them for driving.

Super company.

Tommy has macular degeneration (really bad) and LOVES the ActiveBlu! Brian will be at Land Run. If you’re on the fence… get a pair to shoot side Matches… no cost or obligation. And, there is generally a “show special”.

All of the gun-shop brands are a bit high.

If you go to Lowes, etc...you can find Great non prescription safety glasses.

My Lowes has quite the selection.

Check them out. If you don't like them you are not out anything.....

I have both. Gold and Red.

Red is NOT for cowboys shooting for sure.

I use that for red dot sights. But not for cowboy guns.

I got to shoot with my new HGHD's yesterday. I have been using WylieX for the past 5 years and I could not believe the difference in the clarity from them. They make things brighter than the WylieX did. The WylieX are the photgrey tint and the HGHD's are the gold tint. They are comfortable and I will move my WyliX over to my range bag for indoor pistol shooting. They are definitely worth the money spent on them. You can try them out and if they aren't for you Chris will refund your money. He is great to work with.

Check around and try to find someone not using their $200 off cert. It helps with the price.
