What lessons did your Mom teach you?

Recommended Posts

My Mom taught me so many things it would be impossible to list them.
One thing she taught me that made very little impression but had a big impact was that Hot Wheels track pieces make very effective what we called “Switch Paddles” when we were kids. Those things sting like crazy when used for corporal punishment.
Unfortunately all of our Hot Wheels track works disappeared one night in a storm…

My Mom taught me many things (and fortunately is still around to continue imparting wisdom).

Stand up for what you believe is right - even if it's not popular.

Life is too short to carry around hate and anger without reason.

If you are forced to fight - fight to win.

If the choice is between eating steak while staying home or eating bologna while on an adventure.

Eat bologna.

The only thing you get to keep are memories.

And

If you're making payments on something; a car, a home, whatever - you will always be unhappy on payment day.

Make sure you pick something that you will love every other day.

Laugh and the world laughs with you; cry and you cry alone.

If wishes were horses, beggars would ride.

What time is it? "Half-past kissin' time, time to kiss again!"

I'll be there in two shakes of a lambs tail.

I wonder what the poor people are doing tonight.

I forgot about another one.

Almost every interaction you have contains within it the possibility of a positive outcome or a poor outcome.

And YOU are the only common denominator in every one of these interactions.

So If you are continually experiencing poor outcomes - perhaps you need to look at what you contribute.

"You work for Gulf Power?"

Maybe 30 years back my older brother's children, who live in Texas, had come here to spend the summer with Grandma and Grandpa. My niece left the kitchen and was heading down the hallway to her bedroom and Mama hollers from the living room.

"Get back out here and turn that light off! You work for Gulf Power?"

And the girl walks out in the living room and says, "Grandma, Daddy says that all the time. What's Gulf Power?"

My Mom is a wise, strong woman.

My Dad was a wise, strong man.

I was and am very lucky to have had the parents that I did.

1. Your teacher takes my place at school. If I find out she had to spank you, you can count on a second spanking when you get home.

2. Don’t lie. If you lie, you’ll have to tell another lie to cover up the first one, and so on. Soon, you’ll forget all the lies you’ve told.

There in lies the problem today, no discipline in schools anymore or at home in a lot of cases.
