Thank you so much for thinking of me, Dear Mohawk.

I just Googled and Paradise is 141 miles from me. I live about 50 miles east of Sacramento. So far we have no fires in my area.

Last year, Hubby installed two pumps and hoses and a propane generator that pumps from our pool. So we can fight our own fires if needed or until help arrives. Also, our house has a metal roof and Hardie-board siding (fiber cement).  We've taken precautions. I do wish we didn't have so many close trees.

Regards,

Allie

NOW THERE'S A GAL  WITH A HEAD ON HER SHOULDERS! :D

Ms. Allie Mo:

Glad you and hubby have taken the right precautions and pray you will never have to become volunteer firefighters.

Don't credit me. Hubby is the one with the brains and know how. Luckily, there is a young man who lives nearby and does the "heavy lifting."

I did select the roof and siding. I can't remember if Hubby mentioned that siding first though.

That's great news Ali to hear you are safe, let's hope those fires  stay away. For some reason I always thought that when ever you mentioned your little bit of paradise that was actually where you lived...I'm glad I was wrong..best wishes   'Mohawk

Thank you so much Gents!

However, I just saw this Red Flag Fire Warning on FB. We are in it. That is a big chunk of CA.

No automatic alt text available.

We’ve been in it since Sunday. Had a close call today but they put it out very fast.

Allie, my son used to be a Hotshot firefighter with the US Forsest Service in AZ. Not sure what your situation is in CA, but as I recall, the Forest Service would assess property and make recommendations on removing wildfire fuel. I also recall they'd clear the fuel at minimal to no charge. You might want to check that out.

Frightening stuff, Yul.

I guess we aren't going to move. Hubby wants to buy a trencher and put in more pipes to attach fire hoses to. Also, for wire to the security cameras and front gate, neither of which we've bought yet.

Depending on distance, cameras no longer need to be wired.

Some will be out of range for Wi-Fi. They will still need power and we don't want to deal with batteries.

Never attach a security camera to you WiFi.

Your home WIFi is insecure regardless of what kind of password you have changed it to. Unless you obtain a wireless router with much higher security standards such as those manufactured by Cisco, etc.

In less than five minutes it can be hacked from outside your home and then the hacker can use the cameras to watch you, record your comings and goings, and if the cameras are inside your home watch you and your family any time they wish and all without your knowledge.

The cameras are cheap for a reason. That is exactly what they are.

There are wireless cameras that do not use WIFI but do require a separate receiver hooked to your router so they can access the internet for storage and remote viewing.

Better are hard wired cameras that use POE (Power over  Ethernet). These cameras generally use a NVR (Network Video Recorder) to store the video and allow you to view the stored video over the internet.

There are cameras that use their own radio frequency to stream video to a receiver hooked to the internet inside your home. These use rechargeable batteries that have a 3 to 6 month run time before they require an overnight recharging.

The hard wired cameras are your most secure choice. Requires professional installation for the best cameras.

Second is the battery powered cameras (These are a consumer item and homeowner installed) with it's own receiver.

As I was finishing my adventure going up the Grapevine today I saw smoke just outside of Gorman. I took some shots of fire crews as they had just put the fire out. I got these shots as I was driving so they are not photo-journalist quality. This was a small fire but they got on it quick.
