I don't know how many times every year I have to remind folks around me that Memorial Day is an observance of those who have lost their life during the service of this country.

Why is it that folks like to say..... 'Happy Memorial Day'?

Its an Observance!

As such, allow me to render a Salute to those who have paid the highest price and to their families and love ones whom they left behind.

Hi Widder,

It may not be in keeping with the meaning of Memorial to some. However, I try not to question people of good will who are making pleasantries. Also, following is the definition of memorial: "something designed to preserve the memory of a person, event, etc., as a monument or a holiday."

Maybe they feel Memorial Day is a celebration of the lives of people who died for our freedoms. It seems that many Memorial services I've been to lately were pleasant (not somber) celebrations of the lives of the deceased person and to comfort the survivors.

I don't know... I do know that I too salute those who have lost their lives for our freedom. :FlagAm:

Regards,

PS The last memorial service I went to was for Diamond Dick, SASS Hall of Fame member, TG, SASS Regulator, retired police captain, beloved "mover and shaker" at our local clubs, crazy jokester/prankster.... At the service, the laughter at the telling of Dick's shenanigans was a wonderful tribute to his memory. He would have been pleased.

Thank you to all who served and are currently serving. :FlagAm:

Thinking of my uncle, Raymond Hoagland, who paid the ultimate sacrifice on D Day. While I never knew him, I think of him often and honor his name today and whenever I hear the national anthem.

May God bless all who died serving our country, and their families. And God bless America.

Today we told our 6 year old grandson what Memorial Day is all about. His uncle tested him later. That said, I don't think I am going to get in anybody's face if they say happy memorial day. Something a little less confrontational would be far more effective, and you might actually make a friend.

As a combat vet that has lost close friends, I will not begrudge anyone that wishes me or anyone else a happy Memorial Day. I would like to think that I can honor those fallen by living as good of a life as possible and being willing to accept good wishes in all forms.

Too many think it's Remember how to BBQ Day.

For those families who have lost, and those of us who served who lost our Brothers,

We Will Never Forget

Rest in Peace my Brothers and Sisters

My father died in 2002 at 78. Just how heroic he was didn't sink into me until they played taps and presented my mom with the flag. Later my mom opened the box of medals and shared the stories she had heard over the years.Hell, I don't think he thought of himself as heroic. He just had a job to do and did it. He didn't die in battle, but I remember him (and my mom) on Memorial Day. We all should remember the sacrifices made by those who served and those who remained behind. Memorial Day is as good a day as any to remember them.

For some, every day is memorial Day.

I didn't mention anything about begrudging anyone. I merely stated that each year, I have to remind some of my friends that Memorial Day is an Observance.

And, I've often wonder why some of them say..."Happy Memorial Day'.

And its not that I expect nor want others to be sad or somber on this occasion. Its just I don't understand how they get 'Happy' involved in this Observance of those who died while serving our country.

It is a somber day not a happy one so if everyone could just stop saying Happy Memorial Day that would be good. Also don't be thanking me for my service on this somber day. We Veterans have our day in November, ours is not today. Today is to remember and honor The Fallen

Good point Widowmaker but I think the people that say "Happy Memorial Day" don't mean any harm. The ones that stomp on our flag are the ones that just flame me to no end!

Hope everyone had a reverential and memory-filled Menorial Day

UB, I hope your ceremony was as nice and thoughtful as mine this somber, gray morning. Everyone from the Boy Scouts to a four-star Army general were there to honor our fallen brothers and sisters, and the rain held off till the very last notes of "Taps".
