What exactly is sea level?

Sea level is when there's no waves. Simple.

Pinheads run amok. Absolutely more irrelevant information than necessary. And before satellites, how did we determine sea level?

Simple enough....the difference between mean high and mean low tides. No rocket scientist required!

HUH?

So I have a question. What happens to sea level when I hook and land a 65 pound salmon on a cut plug herring, and remove it from the water to my Bar B Q grill. Does the displacement of the salmon in the water lower sea level? I read about a Pythagorean theorem somewhere.

This brings up the next question; since the speed of sound at sea level is about 1128 feet per second at 70 degrees Fahrenheit, is that the same sea level every where on earth?

No, I am not gonna put a can on my Marlin, with a 24" barrel, it is long enough as it Is!

I suppose the next question is, "Will my bullet follow the curvature of the earth, or drift off into space?"

HAR! If that were true, Christopher Columbus would not longer be around and they would have

changed the name of Columbus day to Flat Earth Day or something.

Well, we flat earth believers do have "something"!!!!

So that is where the Flat Earth Beer commercial comes in!

The only thing I am sure of is... If you drink enough beer you don't care either way. :P:P

No, but you'll care about how hard the Earth is when you fall down drunk and bash your nose against it.

That's why I do my heavy drinking sitting close to the floor. SEE, all that ORM training I got in the Navy was good for something after all. It made me realize that it is safer to get drunk sitting near the floor than on a bar stool.

It's so much fun here. The thread started out on how sea level is calculated and morphs into advice on heavy drinking tactics!:lol::lol: Love it!!

According to most scienctist, global warming is going to raise the sea level and doom is coming. So might as well drink away our troubles and worries. So sea level and drinking go together.

I am not going to worry about the sea rising, after all the extra will just flow off the edges. Problem solved!

"Billy, you have an indoor swimming pool?

I hope the sea level does rise, I will have deep water frontage and the property value will go up."

I'm with you.

My cottage is about 150' from the water, with one house between me and it; the land is low and coastal. The Feds and the Locals will not allow anyone to build new seawalls; they claim they deflect wave action and cause damage to adjoining property. So as the water rises, my neighbor's house (which is only about 5-6 feet above sea level) will eventually be flooded and either collapse or need to be demolished. Of course, the Feds have been guaranteeing Federal Flood Insurance no matter where you build, so they will get paid for the loss of the structure.

And I will have an unobstructed water view and beach frontage. My house is elevated - about 15' above sea level. I'm starting on my seawall now, before the water comes and they won't let me build it. ;)
