Hello Sass community. Just getting into this hobby and wondering if anyone is using Tjayz holsters? Looking into a drop loop holster with a crossdraw holster. Any info would be appreciated. Thank you

Never heard of that brand so don't have an opinion one way or the other.  When I first started most recommended either Kirkpatrick or Mernickle.

Also J-M Leather. He did a great job on Ellie's rig. Got mine from Kirkpatrick.

Looking at their website I wouldn't buy holsters for SASS from them.  If you go to the website of J-M Leather, Kirkpatrick or Mernickle beside belt length, the most important question they as is what make, model, and barrel length of pistol the holsters will be used with.  The maker you inquired about doesn't ask these questions.

In CAS there are a lot of different pistols that can be used. Each one has a different size and shape. The holster needs to be made so that it conforms the shape of the pistol that it will be used with.  Granted some holsters will work with one that one make of pistol. Others will not.

Go to a match or two BEFORE you buy anything.  It will save you a lot of money in the long run.

Hey LM:
Moosetracks is sporting a fine-looking set of holsters -- Who made his?
Who made Bubba's?  They obviously work well for him.

Leatherman up at the Sandusky County Regulators makes really fine gunleather, and he's kinda-sorta local to you.

Like Lumpy said! Go to some matches and look and ask questions!

When you’ve spent a little time gathering information and ideas, you’ll make more informed decisions.

I’ve used Persimmon Dan at Murphy Leather and Mike/Michigan Rattler with absolute satisfaction! Both are shooters and specialists in Cowboy Leather!  So is Doc Noper, although I personally haven’t used him myself!

Sorry to say that Johnny has closed his business.   :(

Geez that's a bummer. Really liked his work. Liked his cart holsters and badge holders too . He and his wife worked on the phone for quite a while with Ellie getting her rig right. Even got stamped/engraved Elephants on the holster loops.

Hope he enjoys his retirement.

A friend of ours made mine years ago, Rowdy Red Tailor made my Dad's. Our friend isn't doing leather anymore and obviously Red passed away..

@Rube Burrows makes really nice holsters. I have a pair from him and really like him. Not sure he can accommodate what you’re looking for.

Murphys Gun Leather by Persimmon Dan in Evansville, Indiana. There should be plenty of examples of his work in your area. He understands what is needed for competition holsters and does attend the State matche in your area.

Me either!  Especially because you can shop around a bit and find the exact same "made in Mexico" holsters for less!

The website looks pretty good, at good prices, especially since they do put metal in the holsters so they stay open.  I don't know of any Mexican made that did that - maybe now they do, but never a few years ago.

I wonder where they are located.  If possible talk to clubs in that area to see if they use the rigs and what they think.

If you wish to try, do a custom order to give a 15 or so degree cant with the lower part slightly forward of the top.  I do see they have the leather strap as a "hold down."  A better option is a stiffened top loop to lock the holster in place without having to have a tie-down loop.

OP, buy NOTHING, until you have attended a few shoots and done a hands on live fire and fit check.

Seems like a cheap way to shoot.  I think I will attend some shoots where I am unknown and tryout some shooting, hopefully for free.  LOL

The OP has not checked back in here yet.  I expect he is in sticker shock at how much good leather costs, such as those suggested to him.  And we all know you get what you pay for.  HOWEVER, there are awesome deals to be made on used stuff - I would suggest the OP check classifieds and put the word out locally and who knows what he might come up with.

I bought a rig from them while waiting for my Mernickle leather to come. It was half the price and was delivered in 3 weeks. Overall it's decent quality work, but the leather is more thin and flimsy so it gives a bit more on the hip. I don't see it lasting very long with continued rigorous use. That being said, I actually prefer it over the Mernickle for now because it's crossdraw. (I got a crossdraw rig from TJay and the SASS starter set from Mernickle.)  Crossdraw is just faster for me, but I do plan on making the Mern crossdraw eventually.

Adding to other comments, I borrowed leather from the club and  other members for my first 3 matches to get an idea of what I wanted.

You have to fill out a custom form for a complete rig, once you submit it they will message you to confirm everything. They were actually pretty thorough
