Hardpan Curmudgeon SASS #8967 Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 I suspect this is a long shot, but what the heck! So, two separate families of relations have goats. Small goats. For their kids (human kind). And they want to train these goats to pull little carts. And, knowing that Uncle Hardpan is a Leatherwork Merit Badge Counselor, have asked if I could make li'l harnesses for 'em. Well... anyone have any clue on where to find a pattern for a goat harness? Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984 Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 How would it be different from any other harness besides measurements. showing my ignorance here. 1 Quote
Pat Riot Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 You could probably buy a cheaper harness than the cost of materials to make one. Not many reviews on goat harnesses on Amazon, but… https://a.co/d/9blPBDt Quote
Eyesa Horg Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 Look into dog harnesses maybe. Body size is similar. 1 Quote
Subdeacon Joe Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 Check https://www.hobbyfarms.com/sew-a-goat-harness-for-pulling-2/ (loaded with pop ups and such) https://llamaproducts.com/tack/harness-carts/ (not goats, but should give you ideas) https://workinggoats.com/?id=210 (various ideas) https://workinggoats.com/?id=209 (ditto) https://extension.unh.edu/sites/default/files/migrated_unmanaged_files/Resource002489_Rep3659.pdf (4-H project) That should get you started. 1 2 Quote
PowderRiverCowboy Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 Had a few for dinner , and well you look at different after leaving on a 7 hour convoy at 0400 and see a Iraqi got herder "tending" his goat. 1 Quote
Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984 Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 When I studied Mediterranean cookery, the prof told of driving into the desert with a guide, stopping at an oasis, and buying a goat. They drove back to their camp with said goat strapped to the roof, bleeding all the way, slaughtered it, dug a pit, heated coals, buried the goat carcass in sand, and cooked it in the Bedouin style. He said it was tough. I have to think the goat herders did not sell him a young virile goat. 2 Quote

I was taught by an abuelita that you marinate, braise, then grill goat. Or marinate and then cook on a spit. Unless you cook it buried in a pit. 1 Quote

Hardpan Curmudgeon SASS #8967 Posted November 15, 2024 Author Posted November 15, 2024 Thankee all for the input! And @Subdeacon Joe, I think you hit the jackpot!! FWIW, I don't think I've ever eaten goat. Lots of other critters, but not goat - and none of these guys are gonna be et anyway; they're little kid pets. But, should the opportunity arise elsewhere, I'd not hesitate to sample it. Mebbe stew, over rice. Kinda like the Buffalo Stew at "Tommy's Joynt" in San Francisco, fifty years ago. Doubt they still have it; wouldn't matter, I ain't goin' back there ever again anyway. I hope! 2 1 Quote
