New ideas for side matches at our annual? 😕

Recommended Posts

a bit of history:  started out with fastest (fill in the firearm) = all the fast guns won.  Middle of the pack and lower didn't have a chance

went to zero-time events where you guess how long it takes you to shoot 5 rounds and then compare that to your actual time, closest  guess/real time wins = everyone had a chance to win the keys to the Caddy.  But you can only shoot so many of those before you get bored

so what else is out there that is interesting and works off a level playing field?

thanks

Can't be any worse than some of my normal stages.:P

Shoot the "spines"(cardboard cut outs with toothpick spines) off a cactus - a la Silverado.

Use ketchup and mustard packs as "bugs" stapled to a cardboard wall and shoot while seated at a table.

Shoot a garden hose snake on the ground and move it past a certain point.

Mix it up with different types and combinations of guns.

For example, a 2-4-5-4 stage using a Derringer, Pocket Pistol, "Rifle Caliber" Rifle and shotgun.

A normal 10-10-4 stage, but at least 1 of the guns, shooter choice, would be an old west era gun that is normally not allowed in our game.   (Revolver carbine, Pre-1900 DA revolver, Mare's Leg, etc.)

An all rifle stage, .22 rifle, main match rifle, rifle caliber rifle, single shot rifle.

An all shotgun stage.   Hammered double, Hammerless Double, 87, 97.  Could be 3 or 4 guns total depending if they need both types of doubles or just one of them.  I suppose a single shot shotgun could also be part of the mix.

An all pistol stage.  Derringer, Pocket Pistol, Main Match.   Perhaps an optional variant adding a single shot pistol.

The possibilities are limited only by imagination.   The "speedsters" would likely still win, but they might attract more shooters just for being different and allowing pards to play with different toys.

Move the targets out

75 yards for rifles

25 yards for pistols

15 yards for shotguns

Anyone that cleans the stage AND doesn’t whine about the distances is in the running for the win.
100 yard rifle targets for tie breakers.
Whining is an immediate DQ.

Tell them Pat Riot came up with the idea so you don’t get nix’d next year. ;)

I will accept PMs from the whiners. :D

Also consider... Announce as part of reading the stage that the answers to any questions will be to the detriment of all shooters.

Read the guidelines for the stage.

Call for questions after explaining the stage. Answer any questions such that it pisses everyone off.

I know a guy who does this (not SASS), a lot of fun actually.

This is also a guy who is missing a finger on one of his hands. At a Halloween shoot, one of the stages required pulling a number of identical pieces of candy out a mixed bucket. He held up this particular hand to show how many pieces. Need to pay close attention when he lays out details.

Another thing this guy does, and I really like it, is a no-alibi reshoot. If you want the option, pay an extra $5 when checking in. Only get one, must be decided at the stage to reshoot (no going back later), and the reshoot score will stand even if it is worse than the original score. Use it or lose it, no refund. The reshoot money goes to a local charity.

A little off the subject of side matches, but what I thought of when opening this thread.

We have added a Wild Bunch stage to our annual cowboy match this year. Will see how that goes.

You could shoot skeet/trap with main match shotguns for most in a row.

Shoot the clay bird poppers for most in a row.

Longer range and smaller targets for both rifle and pistol for speed and accuracy.

Fastest plate rack with pistol and rifle only allow 5 shots so accuracy becomes very important.

Run a stage offhand only.  Right handers must shoot left handed and left handers must shoot right handed.

Fastest one shot rifle reloads for 5 rounds.  Could do it with pistols too.

Cut the rope. @Tennessee williams can give the details.

BTW I like the call your time for speed events.

We have a "rope holder" set at 30 feet. It's nothing special, it just holds the rope tight. The rope is ¼" diameter. All you have to do is cut it with your rifle, pistol, or side match pistol. i.e. derringer. Randy St Eagle and myself are the only ones I know cut it with the derringer. Randy did it twice so far and didn't take nearly as many shots at it as I did. I think he cheated and used the sites but I aint sure.

Have y'all ever done a post shoot?

4x4 or 2x4 planned in the ground several in a row and whoever shoots it in half first wins.

Used to do them at rondevous. Can take a bit with rocklocks.

I imagine between 2 pistols a rifle and shotgun should be able to cut lumber.

Timber cut: Similar to Texas Joker above, but in teams of pistoleer, shotgunner and rifle shooter. Throw in an entry fee to be divided among the top three teams or whatever.

Include the use of a Falling or Rolling Block as part of the stage.

another fun one is a man to man shoot off.  you need a double target for the end to determine the winner.  have 5 targets plus the stop target shoot 5 out of one pistol going one direction and then shoot them going the other way with the other pistol and the 6th shot knocks down the stop target.  keep going until there is an overall winner.

The biggest problem I have with side matches is the lack of information.

If you’ve never been to a particular match before, how are you going to know what’s available and what firearms to bring?

A schedule of events is something else a lot of clubs seem to overlook. When is registration? What time is the safety meeting? What events are on which day.

All of the above should be in the same document as the match registration form.

If I’m considering attending a particular match it really helps to know what’s offered and when.

we sent the side match judges' instructions out with our registration form.  that way the shooters had a pretty good idea of what to expect

had schedule of events on the form also
