Father Kit Cool Gun Garth
How long would it take you to obtain a suppressor where you live? Just curious, as I was on the assumption it was quite a lengthy process, taking anywhere up to a year from start to finish.

Still hand Bill
Depends. A friend got his in less than a week from scheels last week. Individuals without common names are being approved quickly, ie hours or days. Common names may take up to a couple months. Trusts are slower. My last 3 were all about 3-4 months from submission to approval. as far as time for approval, there has never been a better time to buy a suppressor. Fyi my longest approval was 14 months, but there were several missteps in the process. Edited October 5 by Still hand Bill 1

Hardpan Curmudgeon SASS #8967
Knowing nothing of the process, I'm curious ~ do they have to be registered for a specific firearm? Can you use them on multiple guns...? As an aside, I had a buddy once (no longer with us!) who was a fair machinist. Just for poops and snickers, he set out to make one himself. He had a .303 Enfield, and a broken bayonet, and built the thing on the bayonet stub. It literally snapped onto the rifle - and with subsonic lead loads was MUCH quieter than without. I was impressed! This was a "I wonder if I can do this!" project; he didn't keep it.

DeaconKC
Individuals applying are seeing approvals within a month. Those setting them up as Trusts are seeing 3-4 months down here.
Forty Rod SASS 3935
I have a friend who got one in about a week. He's having it fitted to a Beretta .32 Tomcat. I don't know what that will entail (and neither does he) but it's gonna look funny. It more than doubles the length of the gun Edited October 6 by Forty Rod SASS 3935

But then again, we have a Gun Trust which makes everything easier. The ATF website has a page that lists current estimate for approval of eForms. The approval time for Trusts is typically 4 weeks longer. My last suppressor was a June 2023 BOGO from Silencer Co. it took an unusually long time for the BOGO form 4 to get approved, July submission approval Sept 2024. I have a gun trust with only me in the trust. I need to add my wife son & daughter to it. My son and daughter will have to move to another state or SCOTUS will have to clearly state that suppressors are protected from government bans per Heller and Caetano (3 million register suppressors is 15 times the threshold for not being unusual). When suppressors are eventually stricken from the NFA a suppressor purchase will be no hassle at all.

Can you use them on multiple guns...? Suppressors are their own entity and are considered a firearm. So in short, they are not registered to a gun unless it’s integrally suppressed. They can be moved between guns at will and provided they are in a trust can be used by anyone listed in the trust. if an individual, then they can only be used under that individuals control. That means no shared access to the storage location. if a trust is used, each person on the trust has to submit for each submission. Not a big deal, but it slows the process down. Also I believe there is a political reason to slow down trust approvals.
