How do I shrink the loose loops on my shotgun belt?

Recommended Posts

Best way to shrink leather is soak in hot water for a few minutes then place in direct sunlight.

Once fully dry give it a coat of good leather preservative ........ My fav. is Obenauf's LP

Agree with this...

just do it with shells in the loop so they don't shrink too much!

I struggled with mine for a while trying to shrink the leather. I gave up and purchased a Mernickle elastic loop belt and never looked back. They hold the shells tight and pull out at any angle. What a huge difference. I will never use a leather loop belt again.

Stitch a "rail" of thicker leather to the belt below the loops - the shells will rest on it and be easy to retrieve.

this was going to be my suggestion as well , its what mine has and it works great ,

I wish my loops were loose!

Let me explain that.

I usually shoot all brass shotshells.   The loops hold them more tightly than the do plastic shell, and they are thus kinda hard to pull out.   Which is why I often just use a pouch.

Lumpy's suggestion is good. You can line your loops with thin leather attached by contact cement.  I like Barge cement for leatherwork, but Dap contact cement from Lowes or Home Depot would work just as well.  Rip Snorter's suggestion of a leather shell stop strip is standard equipment on the shotgun belts I make with either elastic or leather loops.  My wife wanted double shotshell pouches on her shotgun bell and they have worked well for over a decade.

If you decide on a leather shell stop strip, pre-punch the holes with a small scratch awl (found at Tandy, Amazon, or Hobby Lobby).  Using the punched shell stop strip, mark where you need to punch holes in your belt and punch the holes.  Upholstery needles work fine for hand sewing leather (use a saddle stitch sewing technique) and are available at Hobby Lobby along with leather sewing thread if you don't have a Tandy store nearby or don't want to order something online.
