Alpo
Specifically the one in the middle. I first noticed it had a pom pom on the end of its tail. Then I noticed how shaggy its back legs were. Then I noticed how short the rest of the hair was. That goat has apparently been shaved like a poodle. Then I looked at the other two goats. They also have been shaved. Their tails appear to be left alone, unlike the middle one with the pom pom. Is that common? What is the purpose?

I don't understand the fascination of any pro sports....people playing kids' games for exorbitant amounts of money. It annoys me no end to hear someone yelling "WE WON! WE WON!" They won nothing! The guys on TV won while these guys sit at home drinking beer and eating snack food. Most of them don't "win" anything that requires skill or strength, or above average intelligence. Most won't even get up to go see a game in person...some do. But it's not my place to tell them how they can't or shouldn't spend their time and money. Like my Dad used to say "You go to your church and I'll go to mine".....and Dad was a pretty decent player at any number of sports and an all out supporter of anything that USU had a team for. If there had been a team for womens' tiddly winks, Dad would have been there, cheering them on.
Forty Rod SASS 3935
GOATS? Alpo, you gotta quit smoking those home grown pharmaceuticals. They're making you weird(er)! Where do you even find this stuff? You need to follow my example. I never do anything weird. NEVER!
J-BAR #18287
The sign behind the young lady showing her goat is "Huffman Show Goats." Huffman. Texas is just northeast of Houston. Search "Huffman Show Goats" for lots of links and videos about FFA show activity in that area. Goats, just like dogs, cats, cattle, horses, and others get haircuts when shown.
Alpo
Yeah, I knew it was somewhere in Texas. And the young lady in the middle was annoyed because she got third place, and she usually got first. But that poodle cut on the goat was just - I got to ask about that.
Yul Lose
Back in the 70’s (1970’s) my younger sister raised goats and would show them and if I remember correctly she would give them hair cuts or grooming before she’d show them. She had a few ribbons to show for it and she also made goat cheese that she’d enter in county fairs.

Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984
Quote That goat has apparently been shaved like a poodle. Not really. “Shaved like a poodle” would be to leave big fur balls around the joints and head to keep them warm while the pup is swimming to fetch a duck.
Sedalia Dave
The kids that show livestock and agricultural projects put a great deal of time and effort into it and in return the agricultural community rewards them well for that effort. Livestock that the kids show is often sold at special auctions and will bring BIG money. Champion Livestock may sell for tens of thousands of dollars that can be used to further their education or as seed money for their own farms. The same is true for those that design and build ag equipment. My girlfriend's 13 year old grandson received a $16,000 scholarship plus over $10,000 in welding equipment for designing and building a rabbit breeding building that took first place at a county fair. CAn handle up to 16 rabbits and the cages are set up for easy cleaning by a built in washdown system. He has been offered a good profit on it but rather than sell it he gave it to his little sister so she has a place to breed and care for her show rabbits.
Alpo
What do they do with the goats and the sheep? If I raise a calf or a shoat, when he's big enough to show, and he wins a prize, and they auction him off - he's going to get butchered. So is that goat going to end up as cabrito down at Jose's Mexican restaurant? Pigs and cows are generally raised for meat, but seems like goats and sheep are generally raised for hair. Are the winning goats and sheeps from county fairs also butchered?

Probably in some cases, if I remember correctly my sister sold hers to a guy down in New Mexico or Texas that used them for weed control. I visited my folks one time in my first new car and I came out of the house one evening to go to the motel and there was a goat standing on the roof and another on the hood, I was pissed. Alpo
2 minutes ago, Yul Lose said: weed control. I was thinking about that, last house I lived in. The fenced-in backyard was just nothing but scrub. So I figured I would get a castrated male, long about March. Put him in the backyard and let him eat down the scrub brush. Then long about November put him in the freezer, and next March get another castrated male. Never did it, but I considered it for several months. We were at the barn with them one time and dad caught up one of the champ sheep, grabbed a handsome hand full of mutton above the sheep's hock and said, "That's what the judges are looking for right there. They're wanting to to see some meat."

Coyote Kid, SASS#54714
If you haven't been to the goat festival in Arkansas, you really should go attend it. They have a parade where the handlers and goats are dressed the same. It's an all-day affair and a lot of fun. Just say 'in.
