Examples of your favorite match name badge

Now that the 2022 state match is over, I'm starting to think a bit about 2023.  We're probably going to have to shift gears on name badges next year and come up with something new. To that end, I would like to start by looking at badges' others felt were well designed yet had a characteristic that made them memorable.

Please post or send me examples of your favorite name badge and why you liked it.

State shapes are cool if the shape is clearly distinctive (oops you're in Iowa ;))  {but it could be worse - could be perfectly rectangular Wyoming or Colorado}

Recognizable landmarks or "known for" items can be cool as well.

In your case, an ear of corn for growing more corn than any other state; or inventing sliced bread or being the leading pork producer.

But no matter what shape, font or cleverness you come up with and no doubt you will strike upon something clever.

Just remember - the shooters name badge has to serve its primary purpose FIRST - identify the shooter for their fellow posse members, scorekeepers, TO's, match officials and attendees at the match.  (I would love to see name and category on the badge)

The "ego" stroke for the event of a clever name badge shape (or material) or event name (font style and size) should always be secondary.

Too often the shooters name is minimized to provide more area for event name, date, location, etc.

We already know WHERE we are - I would rather know WHO you are.

Name badges should be just that..... NAME badges. Everyone knows what event you are at but most badges take up a good portion of the badge with the club name and event and the name is small or not in a contrasting color. I am old and forget names. There, I said it. Make the name at least 1/3 to 1/2 of the badge and in a contrasting color so people can see the name at a glance. I can't take pictures of them right now but two recent examples that I can think of were Indiana State Championship and Ohio State Black Powder Championship. Two different types but both easy to read. IN State was plastic laser engraved and OH BP shoot was a pin back pressed button type. IN State was large white letters on a darker background. Oh BP shoot had a thin black outlined yellow letters that contrasted against the design. If you get or make pressed button badges (I have), the design might look good on your computer screen when you design it but the finished product just might be hard to read. No fancy fonts.

At the last Bordertown match they had magnetic name badges that I really liked. Each had 2 very powerful magnets that even worked through your hat. It was nice to not have to poke holes. I've ripped holes in a few shirts when standard pin-on badges have caught things.

That's a great idea.  No more holes in things!  If they require holes, I usually put them on my hatband so I don't have to poke holes in my clothes.

well , the ND/SD state shoot has been using a buffalo badge most years ive attended , i like it , i have a goodly number of them , the Wisc state shoot uses a train at the location i shoot it at , its also a nice one i have a fair number of these as well but that one floats between a couple clubs and ive not shot at the others yet , always go back to the same shoot if its state shoot or not ,

ive not shot the MN state shoot yet [not proud of that] its my home club back when i started this , but it always falls on a weekend i have to work , my plan is to get there next year if i can , i have no idea what the name tag badge looks like tho ,

i gotta come back and point out that WI also used a state plaque - i have some of those , and both used a regular name tag a few times , there are some others over the years as well , i think the off years in WI are sometimes represented differently ,

the regular name tag was used at the first rough riders shoot - i had a great time there ,

i do save all my badges - they are pinned to the first shirt i ever wore for SASS , i really dont care what they look like i just like saving the remembrance of all the good times and its a compact way of doing it ,

Good morning Popcorn..

Creeker and Sixgun.. probably hit the nail on the head..

Biggest thing on the badge should be “Shooters Name”..

centered and in contrasting bold color..

I completely enjoyed the Illinois State Shoot but yeah..

the badges were hard to read..

I had to get real close and stare at it to read the name..

Other than that keep doin’.. what yer doin’..

Just sayin..

Rance..

FYI Slater did the badges and awards for the TN state match this year and they looked great.

At the Tejas Caballeros annual meets the name tag is a GARTER with only your name stitched to it. Each year is a different color, and you frequently see people wearing them at other club's monthly and annual events.

Lady Prickly Pear Peggy makes them and would "probably" make them for another club if requested.

I have one of these.  I like badges that are hard to dislodge from clothing.  Too many badges end up on the ground at matches.

It was my understanding that the ladies badges were supposed to be hard to read so the guys had an excuse to study them longer.

Here's a couple of my early EOT and OWSA National Shootout badges.  The large star is from 1986, (lucky shooter number to match), the two smaller ones from either '87 or '88.  Mine includes the category (BP).  The OWSA is from about 1994

I just like any badge that clearly shows the person’s name.  One match had large enough letters but it and background were so dark you had to be within a foot to read the name.  To me less is more.
