No, they tricked us, said America was a land full of whiskey and tobacco.   Now there are more Irish decendants in America than Ireland.

Is this is what happened when they took whiskey and tobacco away from the Irish? They ended up with nothing else to do?

... my first thought was, "WHAT DID YOU EAT???" ... then I looked closer and realized I wouldn't need that gallon of colonoscopy prep after all if I saw this ...

It's a free activity to do.  Gets expensive 9 months later.

Australia takes 4th in the world for largest population who claim Irish ancestors.

I think this NEEDS the humor thread.

Australia has imposed a sweeping ban on social media for children under 16, one of the world’s most comprehensive measures aimed at safeguarding young people from potential hazards online. But many details were still unclear, such as how it will be enforced and what platforms will be covered.

After sailing through Parliament’s lower house on Wednesday, the bill passed the Senate on Thursday with bipartisan support. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has said that it puts Australia at the vanguard of efforts to protect the mental health and well-being of children from detrimental effects of social media, such as online hate or bullying.

The law, he has said, puts the onus on social media platforms to take “reasonable steps” to prevent anyone under 16 from having an account. Corporations could be fined up to 49.5 million Australian dollars (about $32 million) for “systemic” failures to implement age requirements.

Neither underage users nor their parents will face punishment for violations. And whether children find ways to get past the restrictions is beside the point, Mr. Albanese said.

  ..... but it's true ...

Yes, we have a related thing here. Must click one is 18 or over for web sites selling firearms and related goods.

No real age certification, just a click. No penalties for minors or their parents, penalties are for web sites which do not take this "reasonable" measure. I think it just is from legislation in the state of California now but without implementing some sort of geo-location filtering to identify a source (and ignoring VPNs), we all now need to click the button. It won't stop anyone from lying, I consider it simple harassment of the firearms community.

And for the problems social media can present to the world's youth, no button  will do anything to address those problems.

As to posting in a humor thread, sometimes one does just need to laugh at certain things even when they are not truly funny.

How the hell do they think they can enforce this??? Teenagers know more about circumventing internet restrictions and computers with VPN's etc than oldies.

P.s Doesn't this remind you of governments and TV channels trying to ban Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones and The Beatles because the authorities thought they were a bad influence on young people??

Thing is vast majority of "Social Media" websites are a bad influence. Especially on the mental health of children. I have a Grand daughter that suffers from a laundry list of mental problems made 1000 times worse because of "Social Media".

Kids and adults say a lot of things on Social Media they would never say face to face.

Unfortunately the horse is out of the barn and I can see no way to round it up and put it back in.

One of Jenorado's life long girlfriends from schools granddaughter, gets picked on at school by a bunch of #$^%#^. In the 'old days' it would have ended (at least a reprieve till the next day) when a bullied kid left the school grounds.....now they get picked on and harassed and bullied 24/7 by social media thugs.

We were always taught at school that Australia was both the largest island but the smallest Continent. Hence why it was called an Island Continent. But i guess that has changed now.

No longer!  It’s just a big island.
