The buttstock on my double barrel has started squeaking in the wrist area. It is tight and no visible cracks.

Any ideas?

Spray a little Ballistol on your wrist!

Shoot it until the crack is visible, then repair the crack.

I'm resisting the obvious squeaky butt jokes . . . .

Yep. Took forearm and barrel off. Seems to be in wrist area.

Also took recoil pad off and tried to tighten screw. Was tight. Loosened it some and squeak went away.

On a serious note, it sounds as though the stock has worked itself loose. If tightening the mount bolt/nut doesn’t work you might check into having it bedded.

could fit a thin bit of material between the wood and metal to alleviate the noise , but im hard pressed to think it is that bad to need it ,

Having no visable butt crack should be between you and your doctor.  This is not the proper forum for such discussions.

This high class answer was made without reference to squeaking.

Remove the screw and add a thick washer as a spacer.

The screw may be 'bottoming-out', and has lost clamping ability.

Resolved.

Took trigger guard off, no squeak.

Put back on still no squeak.

Shot today no squeak.

I didn't have a screwdriver to fit that one screw and a friend supplied one today.

OLG I may try that also.

I could not resist my baser instincts.

The wood has shrunk so the butt stock screw has bottomed out (as said here) so add a washer. The looser the stock is the more likely for it to crack or a chip may come off the upper corners
