Subdeacon Joe Posted October 22, 2018 Posted October 22, 2018 Razzle Dazzle camo! What are the three lugs at the muzzle for?
Colorado Coffinmaker Posted October 22, 2018 Posted October 22, 2018 Not Lugs. Are Plugs. Plugs keeps Water and bugs out of the bore.

Colorado Coffinmaker Posted October 22, 2018 Posted October 22, 2018 Ah Ha. Those Lugs. Nadia Clue. Haden't noticed em.
Charlie Harley, #14153 Posted October 22, 2018 Posted October 22, 2018 That’s where the accessory flash hider or suppressor attaches.
Sixgun Sheridan Posted October 22, 2018 Posted October 22, 2018 That's where you put a wrench on them for quick barrel changes.
Tex Jones, SASS 2263 Posted October 22, 2018 Posted October 22, 2018 Sixgun is close to correct. The lugs anchor the tool that is used to remove the replaceable rifled sleeve in the gun tube.

I thought that they might have something to do with some sort of barrel replacement, but I couldn't see a barrel that size being screwed into a receiver. Didn't know the liner was replaceable, even though it makes perfect sense. Most be a heck of a thing to see.
Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984 Posted October 22, 2018 Posted October 22, 2018 comparing to the M110 8” SP howitzer, the naval barrel is about 15” longer, the projectile 138 lbs heavier, the rate of fire, 10/minute vs 2 min per round. Range is about the same. numbers are likely a little off because Wikipedia does not differentiate between m110a1 and m110a2 our howitzers were usually no combat ready because the barrels were too old, all the good stuff was going to SE Asia.

Badger Mountain Charlie SASS #43172 Posted October 23, 2018 Posted October 23, 2018 Can you reload those powder cases and does RCBS make reloading dies? What size primers ?
Dutch Wheeler Posted October 23, 2018 Posted October 23, 2018 Are the powder cases reloaded on board, or stowed away and returned to shore? Are those brass?

What size primers ? Dillon made a progressive press. Primers? Why, obviously you would use Large Rifle primers.
Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984 Posted October 23, 2018 Posted October 23, 2018 The primers we used on the M110s could have 45-70 brass. They were that big.

Are those brass? My father was a Navy Gunners Mate Warrant Officer. We had an ashtray made from the base of one of those 8" shells and as a kid I got to polish them on occasion. So at least some of them were brass. As far as reloading them I don't know and never thought to ask.
Dustin Checotah Posted October 25, 2018 Posted October 25, 2018 As a kid I went on the U.S.S. Boston. They had 8" guns at least I think the first 2 up forward were still there but the rear had been removed to make the ship a guided missile cruiser. I got to go into one of the magazine rings with my dad. This was about 1960 or so.
