I just picked up a beautiful Win 97 and I'm gonna have a pard of mine cut the barrel and slick it up. What size barrel are you '97 guys using? It's 29" now.

Well if it was me, I'd use a 12 gauge barrel, iffin it's a 12 gauge.

Rye,

My favorite LENGTH of barrel is 18.25" up to 20".

I have had most of my competition 97's cut to 18.25

I have shotguns in 18 1/4 and 20 inches and for manoeuvering around stages and props haven't really noticed a difference in them. Most guys have 20 inch and I suppose personal preference on the feel may influence you. The only other thing I might consider is the effect on resale if it's cut just over the limit.

Rye, it's a matter of personal preference. How other shooters feel about certain length, may not feel right for you. My suggestion is try out someone else's 97 with different barrel length and see how it feels to you.

I have a 97 in 18.25" and a 20" and they feel good to me. But that's me. Some taller shooters prefer a longer barrel for balance sakes. It may be different for you.

No, I am not insinuating anything regarding your height ;):P:lol: But try it out first before cutting. You're welcome to try mine if you like, just let me know and I will bring them at the next shoot.

See you

Had my most recent one cut to 24" and had it choke tubed and after using 18" and 20" 97's since I started the game I am a believer in that 24". Love the balance and feel.

Who did you end up using to do the cut and tube Deuce?

On a solid frame 20" is pretty ideal, my take downs are at 18.25"

Thanks guys, I've tried a couple pards shotguns, including yours Crossdraw! They were 20" and that felt good so I think 20" is what I'll get it cut to!

Much obliged, Rye :)

24 could do double duty on stages as well as cowboy clays if your club have them.

RYE,

I bet you will be happy with the 20" decision and probably won't be able to tell much difference in performance between the 18+, 20" or even 22" except in the way it feels in the balancing.

The 20" will serve you greatly.

thanks for this thread , im going to cut one of mine this spring and this gave me pause to reflect on what i might like best - not concerned about cowboy clays as i have another in full length , so im only concerned with the length of the short one , i will give this a bit more thought [measure twice cut once philosophy] i think ill start longer -i can always cut more

That is the secret right there folks. Confidence has been instilled. Use the length that is legal and shoots the best for your handling.

The answer is a brand new and indestructible IAC M-87w20cb "Cowboy Competition" fitted with a 20 inch open, cylinder bore barrel. The new guns are available through cowboy pards like Outlaw Gambler and Johnny Meadows. They have "demo's" that you can borrow and try out. The guns are so slick and smooth right out of the box, they don't need any gunsmithing. 17 years of changes and upgrades in technology means these guns wil outlast any Winchester M-97 and not breakdown when you least expect it !

I've been using SxS coach guns forever so 20" length for the 97 would be closer to what I'm used to. If I want a longer one then I'll just buy another gun or maybe a barrel since it's a takedown!

No worries Rye! It's not the length of the barrel -it's how you use it!

..and how you use it has everything to do with how comfortable you are with it! :)
