Larsen E. Pettifogger, SASS #32933
Winter Range is coming fast and a year's worth of hard work is about to come together for the biggest and best shoot yet. Winter Range has been filling sooner each year. This year the match was full with 756 shooters on December 2. After some discussions, the Winter Range board raised the shooter limit to 792 (22 shooters per posse). There is a waiting list, but there have been some cancellations and shooters on the waiting list are being added to keep the match full at 792. There are 125 Wild Bunch shooters and 150 mounted shooters are expected. The vendor count is slightly ahead of last year so there should be 100 vendors again this year. The stages have been carefully reviewed to ensure there is an even flow from stage-to-stage. Many of the stages leave the shooters with choices on where to stage their guns and how to shoot the scenarios. They will be fun for new shooters and still present a challenge for returning shooters. The Winter Range Saloon is stocked and here is a shot of some of our "actors" filming this year's safety video. http://i228.photobuc...r1/P1050668.jpg http://i228.photobuc...r1/P1050670.jpg One of the things we are trying this year is to build a stage in one bay that goes from berm to berm. Here are a couple of the trestles that will help span the gap. They are HEAVY. http://i228.photobuc...r1/P1050693.jpg http://i228.photobuc...r1/P1050712.jpg Across the top of the trestles will be trusses that will help span the bay. Here's a couple of shots of the trusses being built. They are layers of 2 x 10s held together with 3/4" bolts. http://i228.photobuc.../IMG_0328-1.jpg http://i228.photobuc...r1/IMG_0320.jpg There are no trees or rocks on the range. So, we are building our own forest. http://i228.photobuc...r1/P1050687.jpg Over the past three or four years the targets have gradually increased from 16" to 18" and now the majority of the main match plates that will be used this year are 20" Here's some of the new steel freshly cut from armor plate. The round plates are 20". http://i228.photobuc...r1/P1050720.jpg

Larsen E. Pettifogger, SASS #32933
Last year we had a fly-by of military trainers in the missing man formation to honor all our pards who had passed the previous year. This year there will be THREE fly-bys. One for each wave on the first shooting day of the main match (Thursday). Bring your cameras. The missing man plane peels off right over Stage 1. http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee241/pettifogger1/P1040663-1.jpg

Larsen E. Pettifogger, SASS #32933
This will be the last update as things are going at a fever pitch getting ready for Winter Range. The work parties are out and putting the finishing touches on the props and targets that go into making up WR. The steel detail is double checking all the welds and has installed new heads on all the KDs and checked and repaired all the shotgun targets. As previously noted, the main match plates are now mostly new 20" targets. http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee241/pettifogger1/P2020732_zpsb4e765eb.jpg http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee241/pettifogger1/P2020768_zps52b4466a.jpg http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee241/pettifogger1/P2020769_zps0f6a9c5c.jpg There is a new church under construction that should be about 30 feet wide and have a steeple with a bell in it. The old facade for the main tent was almost three stories tall and was getting to be a bigger and bigger project for the old guys (including me) that set it up every year. So, there were 64 sheets of plywood in the old main tent facade and in the old jail. These panels are being redesigned into a western town that will cover the entire front of the main tent. The mural will go in the rectangular window and when finished will look like you are looking into a general store. http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee241/pettifogger1/P2020750_zpsf1b35950.jpg http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee241/pettifogger1/P2020752_zps9c10bd9c.jpg The main tent started going up the morning of Saturday, February 2. After eight hours it was about half of the way done. In the next several days until WR the vendor village will also be set up and the normally barren range transformed into a shooter's paradise. http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee241/pettifogger1/P2020735_zps852a2341.jpg http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee241/pettifogger1/P2020739_zps48db8d00.jpg http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee241/pettifogger1/P2020777_zpsa4c21c97.jpg After a long day everyone headed home. At the entrance to the range the folks taking the evening balloon rides were just taking off all over the desert. http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee241/pettifogger1/P2020778_zps318b51a0.jpg See you all in less than TWO WEEKS!!!
