Marshal Max Henry Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 It may have been done but Im new and I thought i may find some ideas of movies I have not seen from people who would appriciate a good Western IMHO 1.Outlaw Josey Wales 2.New True Grit 3.Unforgiven 4.Open Range 5.The Good,The Bad,and The Ugly 6.The Longriders 7.Pale Rider 8. The Magnificent 7 9.Fist Full of Dollars 10.Any Spaghetti Western lol Just wondering what other cowboys opinions are and if their is anything else worth watchig.
Buckshot Frank Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 I probably haven't seen enough of them to feel qualified to put out a Top 10 list, but some of my favorites include Tombstone, Unforgiven, Outlaw Josey Wales, High Noon, Fistful of Dollars, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, and High Plains Drifter. It looks like I need to branch out from Clint Eastwood westerns . I watched High Noon last week and thought that it was fantastic! I also watched the original True Grit and enjoyed it; I still find John Wayne a little hokey, but I'm starting to come around.
Border Ruffian Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 It may not be in the top ten but Gene hackman and Sharon Stone in "The Quick and The Dead" is one of my favorites.
Utah Bob #35998 Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 The Searchers Cheyenne Autumn Culpepper Cattle Company Tombstone The Man who Shot Liberty Valance And of course, Lonesome Dove
Rance - SASS # 54090 Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 For Christmas I got a "Cowboy Movie Collection" 50 movies... I think the newest one is 1956... 90% of them are black and white... Stars are people like Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Hoot Gibson, Tom Mix... Ought to be interesting watching... Rance Thinkin' I need to get my DVD player hooked up So I kin watchem'
Pancho Peacemaker Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 1) Josey Wales 2) 3:10 to Yuma (new version) 3) The Shootist 4) True Grit (new version) 5) Quick & the Dead 7) High Plains Drifter 8) Pale Rider 9) Wild Bunch 10) The Magnificant Seven
SGT. QUINCANNON, SASS #32999 Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 Top Ten isn't enough! The order of these selections changes frequently, but here are my favorites- 1. Lonesome Dove (Always #1!!!) 2. The Searchers 3. Red River 4,5,6. Ford's "Cavalry" Trilogy 7. Ride the High Country 8. Tombstone 9. Rio Bravo 10. The Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance 11, 12, 13. Tom Selleck's TNT Western Trilogy 14. Quigley Down Under 15. The Shootist 16. The new True Grit (this one will probably go up the list once I see it a few more times) 17. Appaloosa 18. Ride Lonesome 19. Westward the Women (if you haven't seen this one, try and watch it- it's great) 20. Hondo 21. The Outlaw Josey Wales 22. The Magnificent 7 23. The Oxbow Incident 24. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid 25. Broken Arrow 26. The Tall T 27. Open Range 28. Broken Trail 29. Decision at Sundown 30. The Tall Men This barely gets me started, but time and space don't really permit a comprehensive list. Strange to say, but my favorite film isn't a Western- Casablanca is at the very top of my favorite film list. As you can see, John Wayne figures prominently in my Western fave list- no one like the Duke!!!
BrimstoneJerome Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 I'd make sure The Cowboys was on my list.
WOGG Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 1. Any John Wayne western. 2. Any Clint Eastwood western. 3. Any Kurt Russel and Val Kilmer western. 4. Any Tom Seleck western. 5. Any Henry Fonda western. 6. Any Charles Bronson western. 7. Any Terence Hill western. 8. Any Jimmie Stewart western. 9. Any Richard Boone western. 10. Any western I can watch without the Wife and kids making noise through it.
Grizzly Dave Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 Jeremiah Johnson is probably one of my all time favorites. Monte Walsh, both the original and Tom Selleck versions are great. Pretty much if it has horses, six guns, lever guns and cowboys, I'll watch it, enjoy some more than others. One of my favorite JW movies is McClintock. Grizz
Abilene Slim SASS 81783 Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 I'd add "Silverado" and "Geronimo" to the list(s). And while not technically a western, "Ride With the Devil" is excellent.
Utah Bob #35998 Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 Jeremiah Johnson is probably one of my all time favorites. Grizz +1 Could be the Rockies connection.
BrimstoneJerome Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 +1 Could be the Rockies connection. +1, man it's gettin cold.
Mack Hacker, #60477 Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 It may not be in the top ten but Gene hackman and Sharon Stone in "The Quick and The Dead" is one of my favorites. I didm't expect to see this one. It usually ranks pretty high when someone asks for a list of the worst 10.
Abilene Slim SASS 81783 Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 I didm't expect to see this one.It usually ranks pretty high when someone asks for a list of the worst 10. I have to admit it's a guilty pleasure of mine. Part spoof, part classic Hollywood western.
Red Gauntlet , SASS 60619 Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 1. The Searchers 2. Stagecoach 3. Ride the High Country 4. Lonesome Dove 5. High Noon 6. Good, Bad, Ugly 7. Unforgiven 8. Liberty Valance 9. The Shootist 10. True Grit (new)
Jimmy Reb, SASS #54804 Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 what about the twins-Rio Bravo and Eldorado. Then also The War Wagon. j-r
ChuteTheMall Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 Unforgiven Open Range Lonesome Dove Tombstone The Outlaw Josey Wales The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly Once Upon A Time In The West Zachariah (1971) Blazing Saddles Last Stand at Saber River
Abilene Slim SASS 81783 Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 what about the twins-Rio Bravo and Eldorado. There were two others with the same basic plot -- Rio Lobo and Chisum. John Wayne wasn't bashful about remaking his own movies. In the '40s it was Wake of the Red Witch and Reap the Wild Wind. I didn't see Sons of Katie Elder on the lists, which I think is one of his better films. On another topic, I've never seen Will Penny. Is that worth ordering a DVD?
Ezekiel James Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 All of the flicks listed are great. Some that have not been listed that I believe are just as good, if not better, in no particular order: Will Penny Winchester '73 Destry Rides Again Cheyenne Social Club The Far Country Bend of the River You Know My Name Purgatory (made for tv) Hidalgo Most of the above are Jimmy Stewart's. Duke made more oaters than all others combined so I didn't list any of his, most, if not all of them, will at one point be listed anyway.
Jebadiah Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 Tombstone Silverado Pale Rider High Plains Drifter Quigley down under Open Range Hang 'em High Unforgiven I Just can't get into John Wayne movies (sorry don't shoot me). I am a younger fellow and have not seen alot of these movies but am adding them to my netflix to get cultured on some westerns. Wild Bunch I believe is the next movie I have coming from Netflix!
Arcadia Outlaw, SASS 71385 Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 Clint Eastwood is my favorite actor #1 but Pale Rider while worth watching is a snoozefest in comparison to Outlaw Josey Wales & most of Eastwood's other films. IMHO AO
BrimstoneJerome Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 By the way tremendous post Max, I'm gonna get my gold's worth of my Net-Flix subcription after readin some of these other posts.
Guest Paniolo Cowboy SASS #75875 Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 Since I just saw the re-make of True Grit yesterday, I have to say that I expected more. But honestly I found it gloomy and depressing. Since I've never been one to jump on a band wagon, I can honestly say that I sure wouldn't list the remake of True Grit on a Top Ten list of Western Movies especially since there are many many better Westerns that have been made over the years. My Top Ten: 1. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance 2. Quigley Down Under 3. The Professionals 4. Big Jake 5. Cahill U.S. Marshal 6. High Noon 7. The Mask Of Zorro 8. Bite The Bullet 9. McLintock Tied for 10th place .... Monte Walsh (Tom Selleck) Tombstone Rough Riders (Sam Elliot) Last Train From Gun Hill Major Dundee The Tall Men Hang 'Em High Tom Horn Winchester '73 Shenandoah The Sons of Katie Elder The Shootist Shane Valdez Is Coming The Cowboys (aka John Wayne and the Cowboys) The Cheyenne Social Club Tribute to a Bad Man 5 Card Stud The Stalking Moon The Mountain Men Rough Night in Jericho Hour of the Gun Ride Lonesome The Violent Men Shanghai Noon The Good Guys and the Bad Guys Paint Your Wagon
Christopher Carson Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 I have to admit it's a guilty pleasure of mine. Part spoof, part classic Hollywood western. I think I'd have said part parody, part Holly-wierd sci-fi. Can't recognize any "classic Western" in it; never saw blood -- or bullets as they travel through heads -- in the old Gene or Hoppy or Roy or Duke or (et cetera) movies. Aside from her 38s (or thereabouts?), I can't think of a single redeeming feature (although maybe come close that they had some less common firearms included). They even plagiarized the title and subsituted a whole different plod. (plot) -Chris
Marshal Max Henry Posted January 13, 2011 Author Posted January 13, 2011 Well I did get a lot of new ideas thinks Pards
Yellowhouse Sam # 25171 Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 Ulzanna's Raid and the Professionals deserve mention.

The classic component to me is the whole fast-draw/stand and deliver gunfights that are pure Hollywood invention and staple of most all western films. To each his own!
The Pathfinder, SASS #985 Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 Geez, nobody's mentioned 'The terror of Tiny Town' yet! Talk about makin' the ten worst list...
Abilene Slim SASS 81783 Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 Geez, nobody's mentioned 'The terror of Tiny Town' yet! Talk about makin' the ten worst list... Oh my, had never heard of it until now. Here's a link: Terror of Tiny Town Another stinker is Gunslinger starring John Ireland and Beverly Garland. This was shown on "Mystery Science Theatre 3000" back in the '90s with hysterical snarky commentary by the robots. My sons gave me the MST 3000 VHS tape (before there were DVDs.
Holden A. Grudge Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 One of my personal favorites that gets overlooked a lot is Hombre. As far as a top ten list goes, I change my mind too darn much but here are a few (in no particular order) The Searchers The Magnificent Seven The Three Godfathers Silverado Broken Trail For a Few Dollars More Quigley Down under Open Range Tombstone
Buck Bisley Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 I would have to say my list is just favorites and doesn't qualify for any general best of all time. If I sit and think a bit, I'd have to say there is a lot on my list of ones I enjoy watching. Some of those have been mentioned... Jeremiah Johnson, Tombstone, Lonesome Dove, Rio Bravo, Hondo, The Cowboys, Monte Walsh, The Shadow Riders, Outlaw Josey Wales, Quigley Down Under (is that a western or an eastern?) and many of the others already listed Some that I didn't see in passing that I enjoyed watching were The Mountain Men, Blazing Saddles, Gunfighters Moon, Dances with Wolves (yeah I know a lot dislike Costner; but I liked the movie)
Anvil Al #59168 Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 Lonesome Dove. Way out front. The rest not even close. Jeremiah Johnson Outlaw Josey Wales Red River High Plains Drifter Unforgiven Ride The High Country There are a few older ones. But for the life of me. I can not think of the names of them. Just know them when they come on.
Grumpy Old Man Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 I've seen almost all of them and can't disagree at all.
