We need a new California plastic bag ban

We shouldn’t have to worry about plastic bag pollution. But the plastic companies circumvented a 2014 law that was supposed to ban them. We’re working to update the law, so that it bans all plastic carryout bags at grocery stores in California, including those slightly thicker plastic bags that are common at checkout stands today, and that plastic companies claim are reusable. The reality is that few people actually reuse them. Instead they end up as trash and harm our environment just as much as the thinner ones did. And because they are thicker, plastic bag waste by weight actually increased in the last few years to the highest level on record

https://www.rstreet.org/commentary/environmentalists-fail-again-plastic-bag-ban-made-pollution-worse/

Per the Los Angeles Times this week:

According to a report by the consumer advocacy group CALPIRG, 157,385 tons of plastic bag waste was discarded in California the year the law was passed. By 2022, however, the tonnage of discarded plastic bags had skyrocketed to 231,072 — a 47% jump. Even accounting for an increase in population, the number rose from 4.08 tons per 1,000 people in 2014 to 5.89 tons per 1,000 people in 2022.

So a law that promised to slash plastic waste apparently led to a huge increase. The evidence has been obvious for a while, and it wasn’t hard to see that one coming from the beginning. For starters, those thin plastic bags that grocery stores used to hand out to shoppers weren’t really single-use bags.

ADDED:  Sorry about that original formatting.   It didn't look like that on my phone.

Well now they will need more paper bags . So cut down more trees and kill more spotted owls. We already know they won’t let anyone clean up all that wildfire kindling to make paper out of . Burn baby burn

In Colorado you can still get plastic or paper bags at most stores (though some don't carry either and you have to supply your own). You just have to pay 10 cents for each one! Eight cents goes to the state, and the store gets to keep .02!  Most folks bring in their own reusable carrying bags. For just a few items, you can just pack them out in your hands, with the receipt to show you paid for them.  The local WallyWorld doesn't have either. So BYO!

We used to get paper bags for free, ..... then we got plastic bags for free, ..... then they charged us 10 and later 15 cents for each plastic bag, ...

... now they are charging us 25 cents for paper bags and NO plastic bags ......

.... and the paper bag still gets soggy when the icecream gets condensation on it; like it used to in the old days ..... <_<

I've been thinkin' about this for a while now....

I wanna get myself some lightweight canvas - like painter's dropcloth material - and make up some bags.  And illustrate 'em thusly, as pictured below.  Might as well "honor" the chief idiot who brought this about.  <_<

Gotta clear cut the trees anyway to make room the fields of solar panels that will eliminate carbon emissions. Who needs that pesky shade, erosion control or oxygen anyway...that stuff is overrated anyway.

They banned plastic bags here in Cuyahoga County but luckily I live on the border of Lake County which still has plastic bags. One of the stores here has a bin for plastic bags to recycle. I do all my shopping in Lake County.

Kris I tried to send you a message, and got an error message saying that you could not receive messages.

I spent several years on paper machines.  We would occasionally make bag paper.  I wouldn’t wish that experience on anyone.  8 rolls per set, 5 set reels.  No fond memories.

I received your message.  I have to look at my supply levels and let you know.  Send me a message with ideas for dimensions, etc.

As I've been saying for some time now ~ every time I think that the state cannot go any faster down that highway to hell, CalTrans opens a new lane.  -_-

I'm still chortlin' over his plans for the california aqueduct system...!

The clown wants to cover them all 400+ miles of 'em with solar panels~!  Lessee... if you use the cost of residential systems as a comparison, it'd cost about $58 million per mile.  But of course, that wouldn't take into account the cost of erecting structures to support those panels; after all, there just ain't no roofs.  Yet.  And of course, if the taxpayers are paying for it, the cost would almost automatically be MUCH higher.

But, it'll save SO much water from evaporating, don'tcha know.  He's so danged brilliant!  ^_^

All that humidity trapped under those panels is sure to make them last a long long time. :P
