Sgt. C.J. Sabre, SASS #46770 Posted April 6, 2024 Posted April 6, 2024 The other thread about that list of "Westerns" set me to thinking. (Don't worry, I took the battery out of the smoke detector). I know that we've done it before, but why not do it again. I'll start with a few of my favorites. In no particular order: (1) Tombstone. (2) Crossfire Trail. (3) Outlaw Josey Wales. (4) ElDorado. (5) Silverado.
Red Gauntlet , SASS 60619 Posted April 6, 2024 Posted April 6, 2024 1. Hombre 2. Ride the High Country 3. Seven Men From Now 4. True Grit (Coen Bros) 5. The Man From Laramie 6. The Big Country A few of my favorites.....
Blackwater 53393 Posted April 6, 2024 Posted April 6, 2024 Okay… In no particular order because I can’t narrow it down that far. My Top 10 The Searchers Once Apon a Time In The West Gunsmoke, (Audie Murphy) Angel and the Badman Magnificent Seven (original) Blood on the Moon Monte Walsh (Lee Marvin) Monte Walsh (Selek) Bite the Bullet Conagher
Rye Miles #13621 Posted April 6, 2024 Posted April 6, 2024 My top 5 1.Tombstone 2. Open Range 3. Unforgiven 4. Josey Wales 5. Quigley down under
Capt. R. Hugh Kidnme Posted April 6, 2024 Posted April 6, 2024 1. Tombstone 2. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance 3. Crossfire Trail 4. The Searchers 4(t) The Westerner 5. Open Range
Warden Callaway Posted April 6, 2024 Posted April 6, 2024 What? Nobody mentioned Red River! Or How the West was Won.
Alpo Posted April 6, 2024 Posted April 6, 2024 I've never understood why anyone liked Red River. John Wayne's character is an ass. And he's a thief. And if I was the cowboy that was stealing the sugar and caused the stampede, I would blow John Wayne's head off with a shotgun from hiding.
Warden Callaway Posted April 6, 2024 Posted April 6, 2024 Red River - John Wayne played a character that was dark and bitter. But the story and musical score was great. Aside from Montgomery Cliff, the cast was top notch. Howard Hawks was a capable director.
DocWard Posted April 6, 2024 Posted April 6, 2024 This'll take some thought on my part. My top ten fifteen. What can I say? I got to ten and realized there were a few I needed to add. Top five, middle five and bottom five ar generally in no particular order. I stopped short of including Blazing Saddles because it is a comedy first, western second. If I run across any of these playing, I'm watching. Tombstone The Magnificent Seven (original) The Outlaw Josey Wales Open Range Shane El Dorado (Michele Carey trumps Walter Brennan) Hang 'Em High The Shootist Quigley Down Under Silverado The Fastest Gun Alive Big Jake The Quick and The Dead (Based on the Louis L'amour novel with Sam Elliott) Last Stand at Saber River Two Mules for Sister Sara.
Blackwater 53393 Posted April 6, 2024 Posted April 6, 2024 My next ten. Again, in no particular order and no less worthy than the other ten. Stagecoach. (Original) The Far Country Broken Trail The Violent Men The Cowboys (just to see Bruce Dern get his ass whipped) For a Few Dollars More A Man Called Sledge Nevada Smith Rio Grande Man With The Gun (Mitchum)

The thing that really turned me off on Red River is not so much Wayne as pretty much a psychopath, as the fact that it all builds up to a fistfight and happy handshakes and reconciliation all 'round. Just plain weird...bizarre.
Warden Callaway Posted April 6, 2024 Posted April 6, 2024 But.., But... what would a SASS match be without a Yeeha!
Red Gauntlet , SASS 60619 Posted April 6, 2024 Posted April 6, 2024 A few more favorites (a subject I never get tired of): Hondo The Naked Spur The Tall T Comanche Station Winchester '73 Man of the West
Capt. R. Hugh Kidnme Posted April 6, 2024 Posted April 6, 2024 My next 5 1. Rio Grande (because Maureen O'Hara is plus in any film, and I got a thing for redheads) 2. Trooper Hook (okay, I got a thing for Barbara Stanwyck too) 3. Winchester '73 (original) 4. Quigley Down Under 5. Hostiles
Warden Callaway Posted April 6, 2024 Posted April 6, 2024 If you need to pick a silent movie, Go West with Buster Keaton. Just a part.
