Rye Miles #13621
I wouldn’t trust the technology. What happens if you’re paying and there’s a glitch in the system and your car takes off ??

Warden Callaway
Our 22 Ford Edge is too smart for us. We have a routine of shutting down stupidity default settings. One time it blurted out, "We see you're getting tired. We suggest you pull over and get some coffee and rest.". What are you doing watching me? Another time while going up a crooked blacktop, the steering wheel started wobbling. I thought the car had a problem. No. I had accidentally turned on the lane control feature.

Chantry
Not a new idea, apparently Ford has been thinking about since 2021 and filed a patent about a year ago. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a43126498/ford-patent-autonomous-systems-vehicle-repossession/ I suspect the legal department will get involved and when all is said and done, I suspect will just shut the vehicle down and have it towed away.

Subdeacon Joe
Not substantially different than dealers/finance companies using the onboard computers to shut down cars for non-payment which has been possible for, and being done, a decade or more. 1

I have an In-Touch GPS “Security System” in my 2006 Mazda Miata. It was in the car when I bought it in 2020. The seller, a high end used car dealer in Costa Mesa, CA installs them in all his cars due to car theft. He has cars like Lamborghini, Maserati, Bentley, Lotus, high performance American Muscle Cars, Audi R8s, etc. He had cars stolen never to be found. Anyway, the system was to work 3 years free of charge to me. It stopped working a few months ago. I cannot renew it because I was not the original purchaser and installer. The company Pass Time owns In-Touch. Their claim to fame is fleet tracking. Their system is set up so if someone steals your vehicle or someone is driving your vehicle and driving erratic with a couple of pushes of some buttons the car is disabled and it cannot be started or driven. You can monitor your vehicle’s location and speed anywhere in the U.S. it monitors battery your battery level too. If the battery is low the system won’t work, so it notifies you so you can do something about it. Currently it’s a battery draining device that I can’t use. I will remove it soon. 1

Onstar has never used satellites for voice communications. Those have always been a cellular based system. When cellular networks transitioned from analog to digital the usable coverage of a cell site was cut in half. On the flip side Onstar's cellulat system is a lot more powerful that a handheld cell phone and often has fewer dropouts. It does however use a system of 4 satellites to find your location when the vehicle detects a crash. How OnStar Works
watab kid
there is some questions in my mind as to why our government is 'driving' car development in this day and age ....i do remember that when hitler directed the car development in germany to develop the VW bug as the "PEOPLES CAR" it ended up with a lot of them around in our hands for a couple decades but ......was it because he directed it or because he let the car companies come up with a great car ? i think the latter ........................i also think that was like the model "T:" ........................a market driven resolution , if the government would but out and let the ,arket go it would drive a better product at a better price and in the most economical methods of production available , BUT TODAY - we are being dictated to , told what approach has to be used and what results atre required to the exclusion of better approaches and results , also the cash subsidies are stifling any innovation or research and development outside government parameters , not a good place to be if you dont want communism or socialism , and there's really no difference other than the uniforms of the past , we need democracy - open markets to a degree - we need research and development without government restraints or funding , we need our original open american freedom and old fashioned supply /demand thinking , 1

When I re financed my first house the person doing the paperwork screwed up the account number they were supposed to take my payment from automatically each month. This was before the days of online banking, so nothing was “real time”. A couple months go by and I get a call from a debit collector. So I go to the bank and the payments had never been withdrawn. At first they tried to blame me because I didn’t notice the payment wasn’t withdrawn. And they were still trying to charge me a late fee. I had to elevate my complaint a couple of levels up to get the problem resolved. Last time I ever used that bank for anything. It just amazed me it was all their fault, “provable by their own paperwork” and they still tried to blame me for their mistake plus charge me for it. My brother in law used to work for a company that sold fleet vehicles and heavy equipment to municipalities and businesses. They put systems like this on all their vehicles. I remember when Katrina hit down south he said everyone was starting up businesses and heading south and a surprising amount of people would just stop making payments. The tec wasn’t as developed back then but he said they had to go to great lengths to hide it so it didn’t get removed.
