Alpo
Another board. Guy took his wife to the restaurant last night, and the ice cubes in their drinks were round. When they got the bill there was a $2 per drink surcharge. When he asked the waitress she explained that that was for the round ice. If you wanted regular ice there was no extra charge but if you wanted round ice it cost another $2. He asked to speak to the manager. The manager said that the waitress was correct, and that he had had this discussion with over 100 customers. The manager deducted the $8 charge from the bill. And the guy finishes his post by saying that from now on he will specify regular ice. Do what? You will be going back?? They charge me an extra $2 a glass for ice cubes? From now on I would be going someplace else. 2

Cypress Sun
I wouldn't go back there and I would tell the manager, in no uncertain terms, why I wouldn't be going back. Seems like there is getting to be more and more hidden BS "fees" everyday and it's not just restaurants. Forced gratuities at restaurants are one but there are plenty of other. I'm getting more and more intolerant (and vocal) about getting nickel and dimed with BS "fees" 3

Restaurants-especially the mid range casual dining- have always been creative with upcharges. That's just one of the reasons that I avoid them like the plague. It's just getting to be more widespread. The one that chaps my buttocks is a forced gratuity. When it's forced, it's not a tip any more, so quit claiming that it's still one. I tip- and tip well because I've been on the other side of the counter dealing with customers and worked in the kitchen. I know what it takes to get quality food and good service in a quick and efficient manner. Everybody's got to pull their weight or it goes to crap quick. Perfectly prepared food don't just levitate to the tables on time and excellent service can't make up for a poorly cooked meal. If there's a problem or the service is horrible, I tip 15% to the penny (since shared tips are all too common and the kitchen folks shouldn't suffer because of some slacker waiting tables and vice versa) AND give the manager both barrels on the way out the door. Leaving a penny and walking out is just petty (and passive-aggressive). Yelling at the wait staff is counterproductive because they can't change the kitchen's problems. If they are the problem, then they are already slackers, probably don't care and giving them grief will only make your service worse. Get the manager hemmed up and then your express your displeasure. Rye Miles #13621
I rarely go out to eat but round ice cubes are extra?? I’ve never seen round ice cubes in a restaurant! Like I said I don’t eat out too often.
Pat Riot
Strange… Was this guy from California? A couple of years ago my wife and I were going to try out a new restaurant in Huntington Beach, CA. We heard they had round ice for an extra charge. Apparently the round ice is made with foo-foo water from a La-dee-da place, bottled and sold by smarmy people. We didn’t bother. 2

Rip Snorter
I can recall my second visit to England as a single guy back in the '70's. On a very hot afternoon, after running around London all day, I was in my favorite Pub. All the drinks were made from scratch. John made me a tall drink with ice, some sort of Collins, I think. Really good so I asked for another. That, of course called for a third. John said "No, you've used all the ice." Count your blessings till they are gone.
Sgt. C.J. Sabre, SASS #46770
I don't go to "Nice" restaurants. Any time I have, usually because it was a work thing, I've been sorely disappointed, mostly because I couldn't find anything I wanted on the menu. I only go to a couple places nowadays, simple places with good, cheap food. Probably the most expensive place I go is Golden Corral. A few months ago, I started going to lunch with a few guys I met at the gym. Our own Grumpy Lunch Bunch, if you will. They had a couple "Nice" places that they went to, but I suggested the places I like. They like those places so much that they're the only places we go to. Edited September 21 by Sgt. C.J. Eyesa Horg
I love if I add lettuce, tomato etc to a burger there is an extra charge, but if it comes with them and you don't want it, there is no deduction! Like Cole slaw for instance.

I ordered a JD & Coke. I was surprised they had Jack Daniel’s. The pretty girl brought me the drink with no ice. I asked for ice to be put in it. She took the drink back. A couple of minutes later I saw her walk out the front door with a stainless tub. I was talking with these guys and she came up and gave me my drink with ice in it. I thanked her and as she walked away one of the guys I was with said “She went somewhere else and got you ice.” I went up to the bar and told her she should have let me know that there was no ice and I didn’t mean for her to go get it from somewhere else. She smiled and said “No troubles”. I made sure that when I left I gave her a nice tip.

Michigan Slim
I hit a local truck stop occasionally. Best food and decent price. Never busy.
Rip Snorter
Got to go to a really fine restaurant a couple of times a year, a very good one once a quarter or so. Generally a seamlessly excellent experience, ambiance, food and service and I greatly enjoy it. Something I grew up with. Franchises, once in a while Red Lobster, otherwise independents. The only fast food I will visit anymore is Dairy Queen, out here at least they are the best. Whatever you like and can afford.

Like Cole slaw for instance. There was a Burger Chef that we used to frequent when I was a kid, (18-19 or so). I always liked extra tomato on my burger, while my friend, Tex, hated tomato. He always said that they were a great raw material, but not edible by themselves. Whey started trying to charge extra for extra condiments, ($.10 for extra cheese or tomato), we got an idea. When I was told that extra tomato cost extra, he said, "I'm not getting tomato on mine, do I get a discount?" "Well no." "Okay, then just take my tomato and put it on HIS burger." "I'm sorry, we can't do that." "Okay, regular tomato on both burgers then." When they served us, we stood right at the counter, with the manager watching, and unwrapped our burgers. He took the tomato off of his and put it on mine. Then we rewrapped our burgers and sat down to eat. They never gave us any trouble after that. BTW, this story is referenced in my book, "Bucksnort". Edit. $.10 doesn't sound like much, but bear in mind the initial price of the burger was $.59. Edited September 21 by Sgt. C.J.
