Rumblings in the Desert - EOT 2022

Recommended Posts

The planning for Winter Range and now End of Trail goes on year round.  The planning and small prop construction goes from indoors to outdoors in the fall when the summer temps begin to drop.  This past Saturday it was a mild 89 degrees and the containers of props were opened for the first time in months.  The final Winter Range was cancelled because of Covid and this was the first opportunity to look at props built last year and to examine the drawings and plans for structures to be built for EOT 2022.  Hundreds of props will have to be rebuilt or repainted to eliminate the old WR logos and to replace them with EOT logos.  Here is one group starting work on some of the smaller props.

Over on the other side of the yard another group begins examining the hundreds of targets to replace pivot bolts, pull chains, target hangers, etc., and to replace any plates that are showing signs of being pock marked or any signs of bending.  The EOT targets are AR plate and are replaced on a regular basis.

Those that have been to WR and will be making return trips to the new EOT have seen some of the phenominal stage fronts built by the Swiss Kid.  Here he is just starting a new front.  Other stage designers are also working on new stage fronts and they will be shown in future photos.  Over the next four months as more work parties take place and the stages come together the Rough Riders will post more photos.

You know that most work parties are on Sundays:D

We can not make Sunday and be home for work Monday morning...

Well, we CAN but getting home after midnight and up at 4:40 after a long day and 8 hour drive, we WON'T!

There is one Saturday scheduled each month...we will see you there!

I thought you were already retired based on the photos of your cabin in the middle of nowhere and you down by the creek beating your laundry on a rock.

I, myself, have been a kept woman for over 10 yrs!!! Blessed, blessed am I.

And the cabin does have all the features of modern life!!:P

I spend as much time as possible here.

Blessed my dad entrusted me with this family heritage!

Sadly, this is the last weekend this year.

But...May 1st isn't too far away!!!!

This past weekend was another sunny and 85 degree day and another EOT work party.  Dozens and dozens of wooden boxes are spread out throughout the range during the match and most are painted to match the stages they are on.  These were grouped into their color schemes and a base coat applied to ready them for EOT 2022's color schemes.  On the left are two EOT stage coaches.

In another part of the yard a group is cutting plywood squares and a short time later they have become the bottoms of a fresh batch of split rail fences.  As soon as they are completed they are sprayed with sealant.

These cheerful volunteers are working on making the tiller for a river raft.  In the background in the container are some barrels.  The river raft will be placed on top of these barrels and become a large "table" to stage guns.

Boxes and boxes of awards have started to arrive.  They have to be unpacked, inspected for damage, have their nomenclature plaques installed and then repacked until the awards ceremony.  The awards process is a months long process.

Well we want to make it interesting. When was the last time you had to do both a full pistol and rifle reload on the clock?

He doesn't need help with excuses...he does a pretty good job of making excuses all by himself...

Work continues on the Saloon (Stage 5). Projects on the range have to be done on Mondays and Tuesdays as they are the days Ben Avery is closed to use. Here we have the new balcony rail and some replaced trim being painted and installed. The building was also power washed today in preparation for painting next Monday and Tuesday.

Today's work party had some long time Winter Range volunteers, Swiss Kid and Hopalong Harry, and our very busy EOT President/Match Director, Blackjack Zak.
