The reason is because back in the long ago time Catholics were not allowed to eat meat on Friday. I believe that rule has been changed. So McDonald's was looking for a sandwich they could sell to Catholics on Friday. The fish sandwich was dreamed up by a franchise holder. McDonald's corporate came up with a sandwich that was a slice of pineapple. No meat no fish - pineapple between two pieces of bread. But they did a taste off. That's why we always had fish on Friday in school when I was a kid. Fish sticks or salmon croquettes. So the Catholic kids could have lunch. You know, for as many Catholic churches as we have in this town, it's amazing that I only knew three Catholic kids. And only one Jew.
