Dead Eye Raith Posted February 16, 2017 Posted February 16, 2017 Just built my gun cart. All repurposed materials, with the exception of the wheels and axel. What y'all think? I lined the long gun retainers with felt after the pictures.
Eyesa Horg Posted February 16, 2017 Posted February 16, 2017 "Fine Job" It's always a little satisfying to re-purpose stuff. Enjoy it and the fun you will have with additions and modifications as time goes on.
Cheyenne Ranger, 48747L Posted February 17, 2017 Posted February 17, 2017 mighty fine job there but I would expect as much for a Texan. can tell you know your way around wood and tools used with wood. With this one done it's about time to start planning your next one--the one that will carry a few more long guns like when the Mrs. decides to join the fun...or your girlfriend. Just don't let them show up at the same match. cr
Dead Eye Raith Posted February 17, 2017 Author Posted February 17, 2017 Any constructive criticism would be appreciated.

My girlfriend was outside with me while I was working on it and it was pretty comical watching her trying to figure out where I was going with it and trying to explain it to her and explain that even I didn't know where I was going with it.
Warden Callaway Posted February 17, 2017 Posted February 17, 2017 Any constructive criticism would be appreciated. Bigger wheels will roll over rough turrain much easier.
Dead Eye Raith Posted February 17, 2017 Author Posted February 17, 2017 Bigger wheels will roll over rough turrain much easier. I'll keep that in mind for the next cart. Thanks for the input!
Blackey Cole Posted February 17, 2017 Posted February 17, 2017 Not that I'm a qualified wood worker but I think you might need to beef up the uprights some if your ranges are any thing like mine rough.
Straight Arrow Hombre Posted February 17, 2017 Posted February 17, 2017 Don't be afraid to modify as you figure out what you want/need. You'll appreciate taller wheels and it's nice if they're flat free. A handy addition to that design would be a shelf or small box up top that holds a box of shot shells and a box of rifle/pistol ammo. It will save you from bending and digging into your cart at every stage. It's a cool cart that looks to be very functional.
Outlaw Gambler Posted February 17, 2017 Posted February 17, 2017 If you are planning on sitting on it you may want to flip the lid over so the two braces are underneath so your seat is flat. Nice looking one.

They are pretty beefy. You can't see them but there are three inch screws holding the uprights on. But thanks for the heads up.

Nice looking one. I guess my butt is pretty narrow, cause it's actually pretty comfortable sittin and the back is a pretty good backrest!
Father Kit Cool Gun Garth Posted February 17, 2017 Posted February 17, 2017 Dead Eye: Looks like you're getting the constructive construction criticism you requested. I'll be starting out with a hand-me down cart I bought from another shooter for $10 at our local club's flea market. I plan on eventually building one of my own, such as you have, and I'm already working on the design for it. These suggestions that you are getting will be noted and kept for when I get to the point of constructing my own original cart. Enjoy.....there is nothing like building something with your own hands. Great job.
Jabez Cowboy,SASS # 50129 Posted February 17, 2017 Posted February 17, 2017 I could use bigger Wheels ,,, Getting long guns in and out , will be a pain in the butt,,,, No good for use in mud or rain (water will enter from the top and mud from the cracks in the bottom ) No room for spare 97 ( they break you know ) But a good try ,,, you will build more .... Imis Twohofon,SASS # 46646 Posted February 17, 2017 Posted February 17, 2017 Short carts tend to be tipover prone. You may want to increase the footprint to make it less so. Nice work, wish I was smart enough to post pix. Imis
Badlands Bob #61228 Posted February 18, 2017 Posted February 18, 2017 One thing I found is that felt seems to rub the bluing off of the gun barrels. I changed over to rubber. I just cut up a mouse pad and glue it in place where the barrels rest. Works pretty good.
