Worst National Anthem

Bad, yes but Rosie O’Donnell…

I remember reading an article - and it wasn't Rosie O'Donnell it was Roseanne Barr - and she said she did it on purpose. She was trying to be funny.

And for some reason nobody else thought it was funny.

Rosanne’s version where she grabbed her crotch and spit was disgraceful.

Yeah, that one in the OP wasn’t very good; but what do I know since I think most of these suck too(And #1 is not the best ever): https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/super-bowl-all-time-national-anthems-ranking-best-performances-from-whitney-houston-to-lady-gaga/

I saw one one time. I do not know which game it was. Somebody linked to the YouTube of the Anthem. It was the combined choirs of West Point and Annapolis, accompanied by the West Point drum and bugle corps.

And it was an excellent rendition. Until the end.

"O'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave."

But they didn't stop. That's the end of it. You're supposed to stop. But no.

The drum and bugle corps stepped in.

Ta tata tatata tatatataaaaa, ta tata ta ta ta taaaaaa.

And they reprised the last two lines.

"Oh say, does that Star-Spangled banner yet wave?

O'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave."

That is not how it goes. There is no bugle fanfare. There is no reprise of the last two lines.

Whichever idiot came up with that arrangement - and I'm assuming it was either the West Point choir director or the Annapolis choir director, which should make them military - needed to be drumed down the regiment, have their buttons ripped off and their swords broken. Then kicked out.

This is the thing that I have trouble with, constantly. You can sing your version of any song you want to. You can sing it faster, or you can sing it slower. You can ignore the fact that it goes up and down three octaves and sing it all in one octave if you want. Any song.

But the National Anthem is not a song. It's the National Anthem. And it only goes one way. If you do it any other way, you are not singing the National Anthem. You are singing your version of The Star-Spangled Banner, which is wonderful for you, but it is not the National Anthem.

Yeah, so did I.  Guess I've been spoiled by people like Reba MacIntire (SP?) and a local gent named Harrison (?)and dozens of other people who don't add a lot of BS frills of their own.

Some are absolutely disrespectful and others simply stink.

One of the best I ever heard in my opinion was in 1994 the opening of Then Jacobs Field home of the Cleveland Indians. The Cleveland Orchestra Chorus and some brass players  from the Orchestra did the anthem in perfect harmony and rhythm. I wish I could find it, if I do I’ll post it. It actually gave me chills!

One of the better solos I've heard is, somewhat surprisingly, Meatloaf at the All Star Game back in the mid-1990s.

Also, Huey Lewis and the News for a group.  That group often sang at both Giants and A's games.

I thought at first the sound system was malfunctioning, then I thought maybe I was having a stroke as my mouth seemed to be stuck open. Then I thought,  “Maybe She’s having a stroke”.
I sat paralyzed in disbelief and horror. I checked the date to make sure it wasn’t April 1st. Is she Roseanne Barr’s daughter, I wondered?

I reached for the remote to mute the volume….but it was too late. I had head the whole thing.

I may never be the same,

Yes. Meatloaf’s rendition was superb. He sang it with emotion and skill. One of the best I’ve ever heard!

I've never been impressed by it.  Speed up, slow down, lots of tremulo.  Impossible to sing along with.  Too much of a "performance piece" and not enough of "our National Anthem."

I normally don’t like the performance renditions either but her voice is just so great I overlooked it . I also loved the orchestra behind her.

I've long said this rendition is the best and the worst thing to ever happen to the National Anthem. Best, because it was exactly what we needed at the time it was performed. Given the circumstances, with war looming, it was powerful, motivational and sung with an energy not usually heard in the Anthem.

Worst, because ever since, singers have been trying to top it.

in regard to the original post, I have to quote my Dad, who would have said she couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket.

Well, that makes it OK.

Quote

(AP) - After a widely panned performance of the national anthem at the MLB Home Run Derby, country singer Ingrid Andress apologized Tuesday and said she was drunk.

“I’m checking myself into a facility today to get the help I need,” she wrote in an Instagram post. “That was not me last night. I apologize to MLB, all the fans, and this country I love so much for that rendition.”

On Monday night, the four-time Grammy nominee belted an a cappella version of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” an incredibly challenging song to sing. Clips of her less-than-popular rendition at the Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, have since made the rounds on social media.

Sports Illustrated writer Alex Carr posted on X, formerly Twitter, “I’m so sorry, I’m sure Ingrid Andress is a wonderful person, but that was one of the worst national anthems I think I’ve ever heard in my whole life.”

I guess I need to turn the radio on again. While talking about lousy renditions they mentioned both Roseanne Barr and Fergie.

Fergie? I thought Fergie was the Duchess of York. What the hell is some Brit doing singing the National Anthem at a ball game?

Oh. Different Fergie.

Nope, I don't buy it. 'Was drunk' can't be the reason her singing was so bad.

Everyone knows that drinking improves their' singing almost as much as it does their dancing.

I wonder how many people forget the words?

Robert Goulet was singing it at the beginning of a boxing match (pretty sure it was a boxing match) and he messed up the lyrics.

But, as he explained later, "I'm Canadian. Why would I be expected to know the United States anthem?"

And then we have this one. Television show, but I can see it happening.

She had been studying Romeo and Juliet in English class. "But soft, what light through yonder window breaks".

I'd rather listen to some random overweight schlub that loves their country, loves their family, pays their taxes; someone that says please and thank you and sir and ma'am out of respect for others and not because they think its what people want to hear...

...I'd rather see that poor schlub dragged down to the microphone from the right field bleachers - without warning - and then proceed to sing the National Anthem quite poorly - but  with sincerity and  heart and respect - for what that song represents - than to listen to ANY celebrity - no matter how many gold records, Grammy awards, or social media followers they may have compiled.

Especially if they are just going to treat it like  another paid performance while trying to "make it their own"

Of course, that's just my two cents - I could be wrong.
