Will small Weasel pick up .32's and .38's?

Recommended Posts

Howdy, Pards,

I'm pondering getta a small spaced Garden Weasel for brass picking.

Do you know if the spacing between the wires are tight enough to hold our smaller calibers?

Also is there a better choice for quick picking?

I used to hear about using nut pickers a lot, but I've never seen one used in our area.

Much obliged.

Kind of hard to believe you have never seen these used.  The nut picker, can grabber (they have several names) and long handled fish tank net are pretty much standard equipment at every shoot I have ever been to.

I think he's talking about those little baskets you roll over the shells (or acorns or whatever).

Gregg, nobody uses those around these parts.  Ground too uneven, rocks, weeds, brass in corners, etc.  they just don't work good around here.

Larsen, we are using more of the type of pole with a steel kitchen strainer on the end, you can just turn it over (from a few feet away) and the brass falls out, don't have to shake it out of the net.

Larson.

I didn't say I've never seen them used.

I just said we don't see them around here.

I've seen them used in AZ, MO and CO.

Around here they're just not used.

Are they worth a 30 or $40 investment?

No. We found the Garden Weasel nut picker uppers ineffective.

I do not think you can train a weasel to pick up brass .

I used to see them every once in a while. I've tried them (owned by others) and they never worked well regardless of the terrain. Especially ineffective on almost all surfaces including smooth, sandy surfaces. They are also known as pecan pickers in the South. No way I'd spend $10 on one, let alone $30 - $40.

They also suck at picking up pecans. They leave as many as they get and it takes a lot more effort than using a reach extender

I have used them for brass picking and they work to an extent.  You still have to sort ot the brass from whatever else gets rolled up.  Better to use the "grabber" and long handled net as shown in Larsen's photo.

I've used a Pecan Picker for over 20-years. Had to replace the springs once and modify it so the opening is a little smaller. Note, I am not affiliated with the seller, actually don't even like eBay.

That design works great on pecans but not cartridges.

The design the OP is asking about looks like this.

I apologize for my misleading post. About the Pecan Picker I believe worked just fine for twenty plus years. Again, sorry…

No apology necessary. Your post was not misleading.

Come to think about it, Them little critters are some feisty and darn hard to train.  And slow as they can only hold one case at a time and are easily distracted.  They also BITE when annoyed.  Kinda cute but ya just can't trust 'em.  Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are far more efficient so long as you don't let 'em rub together :P

The range I belong to in NC uses these type with fairly good success. I live in an area called ‘The Sandhills’. The ground is flat and rock free. If you want rocks or gravel you have to import it. It doesn’t pick up 22 shells, but works for 3spl/9mm ok. Not sure about the shell sizes you mentioned.

As one of the local landscape contractors once told me. “Here we got three tops out saul. We got Bottum Feil which dunt grow nuthin, Top Feil which’l grow thins but et’s  fulla routs n’ stuff en we hev Top Saul which’l grow thins, but it’s aaal saind.

Try using a Southern accent, that’s my friend Pete the landscaper. A Good Old Boy I met when we moved down from the northeast.

Ay Cummon Larsen E.

The 30% increase had nothing to do with the idiots that putz Boys-n-Gurls inna same tents.  That 30% increase is the result of pure unadulterated GREED by the manufacturers.  "They" saw a way to blame it all on the Pandemic and make a bunch of Profit.  Pure GREED.  Same same the Petroleum Conglomerates put the squeeze on fuel prices.  There is NO reason for it other than pure Corporate GREED.  And if you don't think the Petroleum corporations don't collude, I have some bridges to sell ya.  In stock, for immediate delivery.  Send ya an Invoice and ship 'em as payment is received.

Any place there is a picker is a "no bend over zone" to me.

My back is in bad shape, so I have a picker in every room of the house (the $1.25 ones from Dollar Tree).  Some rooms have two so if I drop one I can use another to pick it up. :)

Sorry Larsen E.,

Way too simplistic and easy to lay the blame on the Politicians.  Especially when there are so many economic considerations is play that have nothing to do with politics nor who flung dung.  Way more complex than that.  Need to do more reading.  Narrow minded ain't good for ya

the RSOs use these at our rifle/pistol range on the concrete areas , they dont work well on the gravel/sand drives or in the grass , the shotgun range has had good luck with the magnet stick for picking hulls tho ,

Most of these picker uppers when used for 32, 38 and 9mm work on concrete floors at an indoor range but not well outdoors as they pick up as more small rocks as they do brass.  Tried them all is 24 years of SASS and 19 years of running an indoor range.

Indoors, a squeeze and a shovel work great but outdoors the fingers are the quickest!
