Alpo Posted May 2, 2024 Posted May 2, 2024 I'm ordering a garden gnome. I wish to have him protect my domicile. The only problem is his uniform is the wrong color. I don't believe the Confederacy ever issued green coats. So I'm going to have to repaint his coat. I'm thinking butternut. The blue pants are all right - captured Yankee. But do cannon cockers have a red stripe?

Alpo Posted May 2, 2024 Author Posted May 2, 2024 I wasn't thinking about his chevrons, although I really appreciate the picture. I was thinking down the pants leg seam. Yellow for cavalry, and I understand infantry was light blue. But should he have red stripes down his legs?
Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984 Posted May 2, 2024 Posted May 2, 2024 I don’t know I would only expect occifers to have striped pants.
PaleWolf Brunelle, #2495L Posted May 2, 2024 Posted May 2, 2024 Would it really matter if the pants are "captured Yankee"...unless from a Union artilleyman?

Logic says artillery would be the same.
Cold Lake Kid, SASS # 51474 Posted May 2, 2024 Posted May 2, 2024 Artillery was Red Cavalry: Yellow Infantry: Blue Staff: Buff Medical : Black

Kid Rich Posted May 2, 2024 Posted May 2, 2024 My front door knome has horns. He was a gift from my neighbors two kids to protect my house when I am off shooting. kR

Texas Joker Posted May 2, 2024 Posted May 2, 2024 Gnarinfolk were not protectors. You placed offerings at the corners of your property to keep them from killing your livestock. Their caps are red from the blood of the stuff they've killed
Alpo Posted May 2, 2024 Author Posted May 2, 2024 Maybe in the old country. But a lot of immigrants changed their way of life when they came to America. Like this young lady. Had to find a new way to make a living.

Enlisted no stripes - non coms and officers stripes.

Officer stripes were larger After the Civil War during it they were narrow beads of gold color. Non Coms had different widths based on rank.
Subdeacon Joe Posted May 2, 2024 Posted May 2, 2024 The stripes on the pants were for NCOs and officers. Sergeants had, if I recall, a 1 1/2" stripe, corporals a 1" stripe. Officers had 1/2" or 1/4" stripes, I don't remember which. The only green jackets, so far as I know, were 1st US Sharpshooters. Medics/hospital stewards wore a green sash, or had a wide green stripe on each sleeve and possibly a green collar. I don't know how accurate the reproduction is .

Michigan Slim Posted May 2, 2024 Posted May 2, 2024 Don't know about the stripe on the pants but I think the Rebels only used raised white letter tires on their guns. And Crager rims.
