Randingo Posted February 5, 2018 Posted February 5, 2018 Chilled lead vs. Magnum. Is one better than the other for Cowboy? I'll be loading 12ga. black powder. Thanks!!!
Randy Saint Eagle, SASS # 64903 Posted February 5, 2018 Posted February 5, 2018 No difference that I've ever been able to tell Randy
Amarillo Rattler Posted February 5, 2018 Posted February 5, 2018 Open cylinder at 12 yds on 9-12” round/square/rectangular KDs is the normal match SG array. You will see a higher % on targets with plastic wads vs. fiber wads than chilled vs. magnum lead. I save my strongest SG loads for clay flier activators and distant targets. Reclaimed lead from skeet/trap ranges is cheaper than new shot, often $30 vs, $50 for 25 pounds. I shoot 7/8 oz of reclaimed lead at 750 FPS with 100% hits at 12 yds. Just sayin’ Amarillo Rattler
The Original Lumpy Gritz Posted February 5, 2018 Posted February 5, 2018 Get the cheapest you can find-Look for 'reclaimed' also. OLG
Jabez Cowboy,SASS # 50129 Posted February 5, 2018 Posted February 5, 2018 I too am shooting a mix of reclaimed shot from the trap range, over 1 1/8 oz. shot but over Goex , at 1,100 fps. It is mostly number 8 with some 7 1/2 mixed in ...
Ya Big Tree Posted February 5, 2018 Posted February 5, 2018 There will be no noticeable difference at our distance. As others have said, which ever is cheaper or what ever is in stock. I had horrible luck using someones home made shot plugging up my shot tube so I'm not sure I want to try reclaimed shot fearing the same results. It would make a real mess when It would drop late all over the press.
Jabez Cowboy,SASS # 50129 Posted February 5, 2018 Posted February 5, 2018 Loaded up upwards of a ton of reclaimed shot with no real issues ... Jabez Cowboy
Cheyenne Ranger, 48747L Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 for me reclaimed is great. No problems with it at all. cheyenne
Warden Callaway Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 I think reclaimed is just fine if it's clean and graphited I got some not knowing any better that was gray and filled with gray dust. I washed it a couple of times and it was still nasty. Here's what the water looked like. My local shot source, reclaimed, clean and graphited, is only $2/25 lbs less than new. Last time I priced it.
SHOOTIN FOX Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 I ship 65 pounds of new, 7.5, tumbled and graphited shot to your door for $110. (42.00 a bag). Pm for info.
Dutch Wheeler Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 I have been buying re-manufactured shot from a private individual in Florida for years, and have been extremely happy with it. He sells through GunBroker, 50 pounds, $70.00 delivered. https://www.gunbroker.com/item/744545033

I use ONLY reclaimed shot but I add a small puff of powdered graphite from a tube into a used up 1lb powder bottle about 2/3's full of shot. Then I roll it around and shake it end to end to mix in the graphite with the shot. I've never had a problem in my Mec 9000 using reclaimed. Using home made shot a friend of yours makes should meter fine with a tad bit of the graphite.

I told the sales men I wanted plain lead shot not the Gold plated kind. He just smiled and said good luck finding some. HA!! Just found some thanks to Dutch!!

watab kid Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 im shooting really dirty reclaimed shot - i got it cheap , i load way down and it dont take much to knock down the targets where i shoot , i think the wadd would do it if properly placed , im not real concerned about my shotgun - its a working gun , but for those that care a lot i understand ,

I used 100X's a puff and had a mess. The guy that made the shot is gone now, His shot was all different shapes and sizes. round, teardrop and hourglass shaped. I may give reclaimed a chance again some day. I think I'm paying $40 - $45 a bag now for new, but have seen it as high as $55 a bag.
Randy Saint Eagle, SASS # 64903 Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 Right now I can buy new shot from a local dealer cheap enough I won't mess with anything else. http://www.gamaliel.com/shot/Eagle_Brand_Magnum_Shot.asp Randy
