El Hombre Sin Nombre
Not that there is any love lost between Clinton and I, but I joined just before Clinton took office, and that policy was already in play so it couldn't have been him.

Sedalia Dave
During my time in the Navy from 1982 till 2002 no one except security was allowed to have a firearm on base. Emptry or otherwise. If you lived in the barracks or base housing you had to store your firearms in the armory. Security escorted you to and from the armory and the front gate. Depending on the base the hassle of getting them into and out of the armory could range from simple to draconian. Ammo also had to be stored in the armory. If during a random search if even a single 22 round was found in your car it was a big deal. Depending on the base it could result in you having to see the old man. Cross bows were treated just like any other firearm and on all but one base bows were also treated like firearms. At NAWS China Lake we could get a special pass that allowed us to have a bow as long as all the arrows were target tips. Couldn’t have a broadhead even if it was broken down. Reason China Lake was different was that the Base XO was an avid bow shooter and he pushed through the paperwork to put a walk through range on the base. After 9-11 we had to move the archery range off base. There may have been a Navy base that was different but I was never stationed there. Rota Spain was the only base I was ever on that allowed us to have loaded firearms but they were confined to the skeet and trap range. Don’t count this as a Navy base as the base belonged to Spain. We were fortunate in that the Spanish Admiral was an avid skeet and trap shooter as well as hunter. We had 2 trap ranges and 2 skeet ranges courtisy of the Spanis Admirality. You did have to get a special permit to own a gun in Spain and it was A LOT of paperwork but not impossible. Only long guns were allowed so no pistols and the calibers were very restricted. Somewhere I still have my gun permit from my time in Spain.

Remember when he dropped out of the NRA because someone in the NRA called the ATF "jack booted thugs"??? Papa Bush was no friend of gun owners. I don't know why W didn't do something about this stupid, insane rule when he was POTUS! Especially after 911! Rye

Widder, SASS #59054
I don't know what the uproar is all about. After all, AFTER the FBI showed up with their little gloves on, their special cameras to show proof that a bullet hole was in the glass, and wearing their little guns and wearing special marked T-shirts advertising they were FBI, no one else harmed. Everyone could go home, rest and feel safe now that the FBI and other government agencies are 'looking into it'. Heck, I'm just glad the idiot who did it wasn't carrying an American flag or else the weenyheads in DC would be ready to outlaw The Flag. ..........Widder (sarcastic mode off)
Chantry
Who signed this order? I seem to think it was an executive order signed by Clinton??? Anyone know!!!! I'm guessing Utah Bob would have the answer!!! Rye What both Clinton and George HW Bush signed was just an amendment of existing law(s) that went back to at least the 1950's. I strongly doubt the average base commander or above is in favor of having troops armed on base. Too much of a chance of something bad happening which means the career of the commander in question comes to a screeching halt.

It was always my impression that the weapons policy on each base was dictated by the base commander. I've only ever heard of one in my entire career that allowed CCW holders to carry concealed on base and only while off duty. He was a VERY well liked commander so as you can imagine, he didn't last long.

Where did you come up with that one? Not everything on the Internet is true For what it's worth, I was in Haiti in 1995 and we had a visit from Al Gore, someone that actually served in combat. We were all armed at the time. He certainly appreciated that.
