Small businesses would be closed or would open for a short time in the afternoon. Substitute teachers replaced many regular teachers for a day or two. Kids would be “sick” or Skip the day. Companies would lose half their staff for at least a day. Local restaurants and bars would have “Deer Hunter Specials” to entice people there after the hunt. Successful hunters would strap their deer to their truck or car to show everyone they got their deer. It was like a festival that only half the population celebrated.

Many parishes in PA, both Orthodox and Roman Catholic, have a blessing of the rifles just before opening day.
