Locking your phone

Recommended Posts

On television, in cop shows, they always have the victim's phone. Which is locked, and they have to try to figure out what his password is.

And after being unable to crack the password after several attempts, somebody will use the victim's thumb to unlock it with his fingerprint. Or they will hold his face up in front of it, and it unlocks because it recognizes him.

In one episode Abby 2.0 is talking about how this guy had only used a four digit code, instead of a 6-digit which was so much harder to crack. And she bet that Gibbs was a 6-digit kind of guy. And he said he didn't lock his phone, which depressed her.

If you lock your phone, do you use a four digit code, or a six digit code? Do you use your fingerprint (I wonder how many chances you get to choose the right finger - they always use the right index finger in the cop shows, but does everybody use their right index finger?)? Do you use your face - facial recognition?

Me, I hang on to my phone, so I see no need to lock it.

I use an iPhone 13 Pro Max.
It has six digits by default.
I do not use face recognition, nor SIRI

Interesting. My iPhone 13 Pro Max uses the same 4 digit PIN that I have used for years.

I also use facial recognition. Yeah, sure, I have heard all the paranoid reasons why I shouldn’t and quite honestly, I don’t flippin’ care. I got sick of being paranoid and paranoid people years ago. Not worth my time, effort or thoughts.

@Alpo facial recognition will not work with a picture or a dead person’s face. The main thing face recognition needs to recognize the owner is eye movement, which is why a photo or a dead guy’s face will not work.

Huh. I remember one time they held the phone up to the dead guy's face, and nothing happened, and then they opened his eyes. And it worked.

But as we all know, you can do anything on television. :P

Thank you!

Re the OP - right and left index and little fingers, right thumb.  Four digits unless something forces me to use six.  Don't do the facial recognition because when I tried it either my glasses or beard, or both, made it difficult to use.

There's nothing on my phone that requires me using the locking feature, so I've never used it and don't plan on using it.

I use four digits. My Android phone may not take six digits, I’m not sure. There is a four digit number that goes back several generations of family for a reference. I think only my Dad would guess it as he used it too. He won’t be cracking my phone so I think I’m safe on the guessing approach. The TV guys use some program that tries forty million combinations without timing out the number of tries before the phone locks you out permanently. I think my phone will give me four chances then I guess I would have to go to the service company to get another shot at it.

Your phone is set up to accept prints from any of five different fingers? Or you have to use all five prints to make it come to life?

Only one needed.  When setting it up after each one, there was a dialog window, "Do you want to add another?"  The first one I entered was my right index.  Then, since I usually hold the phone in my left hand, left index.  Thought about it, and sometimes my index finger is greasy, wet, or dirty, so added little finger.  Added right thumb for the times when I might be holding it in my right hand.

I thought maybe it would be for that possible time when you got a little sloppy in your cooking, and cut a couple of your fingers off. Oops.

But you got some more fingers left so you can still turn your phone on to call 911.

The thing that really ticked me off about the iPhones that took fingerprints to open was the fact that if your finger are cold, wet, cold & wet, filthy or bloody your fingerprints would not be accepted to open the phone.
I learned that the hard way with my first iPhone in 2015. I did not have a password because it was a work phone that I could use for personal business. IT didn’t see fit to allow the use of PINs.
On the documentation for a new phone I explained the phone wouldn’t open and I was injured (bloody hands). I explained the phone slipped and was run over by a passing car.

They bought it.

I told them the next phone better have a PIN or I would not accept it.
It was a bit of a bureaucratic tempest in a tea cup. I won.
I also got my own personal phone. I didn’t trust those controlling morons to set it up right. Just before I left in 2018 that phone miraculously fell into the washing machine…I mean, my phone was accidentally washed.

I couldn’t delete items like photos from the phone so I meggared it then threw it in the washing machine. It was toast.

Why am I even talking about this? I’m retired and done with the likes of them.

Nice day, huh?

I had my phone locked for awhile but unlocked it. I always have my on me so unless I lose it I’m okay.

I use a fibonacci sequence derived from an expanding sign wave from the toroidal expression of a Tokamak magnetic containment field.

I'm such a Luddite I'm afraid that if I locked my phone I couldn't get it unlocked again.

Not even close to Ned Ludd - I don't have or carry a phone.  Haven't since I retired a good many years ago.  Works for me, just as it did before there were cell phones.  I will say, it is hard to find a pay phone.

That makes it tough for Clark Kent to find a place to change clothes.

I still have dial telephones hooked up in my house.  When I mentioned that here or the other forum one time somebody posted that they had a crank telephone in their house.  I asked if that was for receiving crank calls.
