Myron Swaim Posted May 14, 2024 Posted May 14, 2024 Howdy all, I have been hankering to try a pair of open tops, shooting Classic Cowboy. But I would need them slicked up a bit, maybe have the hammers “lowered” for easier duelist shooting with my old thumbs. Does anyone know who the resident gunsmith guru is for open tops? Thanks, Myron
The Rainmaker, SASS #11631 Posted May 14, 2024 Posted May 14, 2024 https://www.goonsgunworks.com/ Has a great reputation for cap n ball guns.
Ninety Caliber Al, 50218 Posted May 14, 2024 Posted May 14, 2024 Boomstick Jay did mine, excellent work! He did them in 2015, been my main match guns ever since. Trouble free, plus he’s a great guy and a vet
largo casey #19191 Posted May 14, 2024 Posted May 14, 2024 Griner Gunworks does excellent work.Just ask me. Largo.
Rafe Conager SASS #56958 Posted May 14, 2024 Posted May 14, 2024 Both my smith's retired, longhunter did some work on my cap guns, boomstick did some action work on my Richard Masons. Don't know anything about goon but have heard good things about his work. Rafe
Choctaw Jack Posted May 14, 2024 Posted May 14, 2024 +1 for Ken Griner , Griner Gunworks. I have two pair of open tops done by Ken. Both with action work, corrected arbors and lowered hammers . Give him a call. Choctaw Jack
Myron Swaim Posted May 14, 2024 Author Posted May 14, 2024 Thanks for all the suggestions, much appreciated, Myron

Rooster Ron Wayne Posted May 15, 2024 Posted May 15, 2024 Mike at Goongunworks does great cap gun work . I know he does some open top work too. But I don't believe he does custom work your asking for on your hammers . Rooster
Colorado Coffinmaker Posted May 15, 2024 Posted May 15, 2024 Since I'm retired, I have to go with "Goonsgunworks" you betcha.

Myron Swaim Posted May 16, 2024 Author Posted May 16, 2024 I will get in touch with these two pards and see what they can do. Thanks everyone.
Erasmus Posted May 17, 2024 Posted May 17, 2024 Whoever it is you best call. I've tried emailing both Goons and Griner and just got crickets. Someday I'll get around to calling and sending in my gun. The last bit of work I had done was by Longhunt's black powder guy, but he's since moved onto aerospace stuff IIRC. He moved on maybe a week before I called to send in a newly purchased Uberti '51 Navy. Bummer for me, he did great work.
Choctaw Jack Posted May 20, 2024 Posted May 20, 2024 You can usually reach Ken by phone. He has a post in the Merchants section.
Colorado Coffinmaker Posted May 20, 2024 Posted May 20, 2024 As an Aside. I would also like to mention, the Uberti Open Top is a Chameleon. Once the Barrel to Arbor Fit is corrected "at" the Arbor, the Open Top frame can be retro fit with any of the three available cartridges simply by swapping out the Cylinders and Barrels. .38, .44 and .45 ALL on the same frame. Once the Arbor fit is corrected, just minor fitting will be necessary.
