Widder, there is no answer for such a question.

Once again, I'm in full and complete agreement with the good Doctor.

I'll never know.....but it's "FUN" trying to find out!

Guess what? EVERYBODY is in it for the fun.

Widder,

Having seen you shoot, I would have to say that being able to get anywhere near your speed would definitely be a fun experience!! In fact, I'm not sure that "fun" is an adequate enough word to cover that unattainable objective. But, being a realistic old codger, I know that that is never going to happen, except in my wildest dreams. But, even knowing that doesn't take away from the fun I have shooting Cowboy and watching my pards and family shooting Cowboy. I think it's the sharing of our experiences in CAS that makes this sport so downright enjoyable. Even on a bad day, I can't think of anything I'd rather be doing.

It is always fun. Let's face it. Some want to win and play 'the game' part very well. Others shoot big bores instead of little bores, black powder instead of smokeless and one handed instead of two. some have race guns and others stock guns. So, you are really competition against yourself or maybe a guy or two who shoots like equipment in your class.

A clean 10-10-4 in about 30 seconds is very fun. Every time I pull it off, I have a big grin. Not fumbling the shotgun reload is fun. In. Shut. BoomBoom. I like that a lot.

Putting a bunch of effort into practice and not getting any better sucks. Getting some assistance from a top shooter and seeing another second or two go away from average time, that's fun.

Fun is also getting transfixed by the flame jet from the rifle and forgetting everything else (including to keep pulling the trigger) while it turns into a giant, perfect smoke ring hanging in the still air......

The whole dang thing is fun. It's different kinds of fun at different matches. I think it's more attitude than speed. On any given day we are all having fun - fast, slow and in between. I never let a bad stage ruin a perfectly good day of shooting.

When you're really on, time slows down anyway and it's like an out-of-body experience. That's when I enjoy it most.

I've experienced that sort of zen-like experience in other sports. A few times shooting trap in particular, when I shot my best scores. Also a couple of times competing in martial arts. Whatever the endeavor, when you get in that zone, it is an awesome sensation. I've also noticed it is a feeling that can't be forced. I hope to reach a point where I experience it in CAS. As it is, at my first shoot, it certainly seemed like time slowed down, but not for good reasons.

Take it from an old drag racer. It ain't never too fast to be fun!!

I've only ever had one or two sub-twenty second stages and THAT was fun!!

There are a lot of things about this game that make it fun. Being consistantly fast and clean would be fun too!!

I shot with RRR about a week ago!! As fast as he was, he was still havin' a ball!! On his worst stage he was still laughin' his A$$ off. On the posse we were on the train ran over nearly everybody at least once and we were laughin' and jokin' about it all weekend!!

All those fast guys are fun to watch, fun to shoot with and fun to be around. From what I've seen the ones that ain't don't last very long!

Widder, I hate to tell you this ole buddy, buy you're measuring "fun" from the wrong end. It's not how fast you go when the fun stops, but how slow! If I go out and something screws up like my rifle jams or I start "short stroking" my pistols, or the hundred things that happen to shotguns, then it stops being as much fun.

Fun is relative though. I still have fun when I went slow and Wyatt beats me, just not as much as if I went fast!

(It's even worse when Korrupt Karl beats me!)

Howdy Sam,

i get all that fun from both ends all the time although I must admit that so far, I haven't had alot of firearms issues.....just operator issues....

Anyhow, most of you have made the point that I was hoping you you make which is this:

If there are a few folks who actually believe that 'Speedy McGreedy' ain't haven't fun because he is too fast, then how do those 'shoot for fun' fellers know when the fun stops ifn they have never reach that speed level?

Hey Sam, Wyatt, Stan, Dan and all you other Florida Pards: your Florida cowboy Hombre Paul has been up here shootin with us for the past 2 weeks. I was able to fix him up with some fine pistols, a Widdermatic, and a 97 for 2 matches and I think he enjoyed everything.

We went to Possum Trot yesterday and he shot clean. He is a good Duelist. But I think he misses his Bisleys, 73, and his own 97.

I have talked to Hombre Paul a couple of times in the past few weeks and knew he was hooking up with Y'all. He told me how that happened.......small world. I thought about sending you a message asking ya ta take good care of him but figured that was a given. He said he had a great time and likes them short barreled pistols.

He ain't been shootin much over the past year and is a little off his normal pace.

He shoots clean almost as much as Col Dan and I can't remember the last time he DQed ;)

I notice your little winking emoticon so I think you do remember the last time he DQ'd. And you can probably blame it on unfamiliar equipment.

Anyhow, were sending him back this week for alittle while but I think he's coming back up this way for a short spell again.

Best regards

Widder,

In any given stage - there is a finite amount of fun.

And ALL shooters have access to the same amount of fun.

If they shoot a stage in 45 seconds. They experience 1/45 of FUN per second.

If they shoot a stage in 15 seconds. They experience 1/15 of FUN per second.

But regardless if it is 45 x 1/45 or 15 x 1/15

At the end of the stage - Same amount of fun, just experienced differently.

I agree 100% and the folks who think this way are the folks I enjoy the most. Fortunately, it has been my experience that most people feel this way and take a live and let live approach to the game. I could name a bunch of fast shooters, middle of the road shooters and slow as molasses shooters that I have a ball with. The fact is most shooters in the game support those around them even though a few say things that don't come across as they probably intend.

I also agree with Possum in that the absolute fastest runs "feel" slow. During the few in which I have had an out-of-body experience, time is slowed to the point that I can have two sentence conversations with myself between rifle shots. Example: "The sights are on the target and the lever is still open. Pull the trigger as you close the lever." I'm told that the "self talking" actually slows me down and maybe it's true. I can tell you if I add a third sentence like, "You need to lever faster!," I might jack out a live round and that will put me back in my body. :D When the out-of-body thing happens and the RO calls out the time, the little voice in my head says, "No kidding!" Well, it doesn't say "kidding," but you get the idea. :D

I'm happy if I can average under 30 seconds a stage for the match. That's not to say I haven't had fun if I don't, but truthfully, I tend to chastise myself a little if I mess up stuff that I shouldn't. Like others, I have the most fun when it all comes together. There's nothing like that feeling when, after the last shot goes down range, you hear the posse clapping and you get a "What just happened?" moment as you come out of the zone.

This game is really intriguing. If I shoot six stages at 30 seconds each, I've driven an hour each way, spent an afternoon at the range, however much time cleaning guns and loading ammo, just to spend a grand total of 3 minutes actually playing the game. The goal of the game is to find who actually plays the least. We spend thousands of dollars buying gear to try and play for even less time. And the less time we spend playing, the more fun we have! Are we crazy? :)

I suspect that if you actually spent all that time and money merely to spend 3 minutes shooting 6 stages you might be seriously crazy. I spend the same amount of money and time for the 4 or 5 hours I get to spend with my friends. The three minutes is fun, but not that much fun. The real pleasure of SASS is spending time with my posse mates whether they are brand new or seasoned veterans. I have noticed that the best shooters are often the same guys and gals who laugh and giggle like little kids as some pard train wrecks. They are the same people who volunteer for posse work for the pleasure of helping. They enjoy watching others shoot. They recognize and applaud when a pard has had a great run, even if the shooter is slower than them. They are quick to make suggestions when something goes wrong. I don't think that for those 4 or 5 hours there is any place they would rather be.
