Rye Miles #13621 Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 I shot smokeless at our wed. shoot, wanted to try out some open tops and had smokeless .38's around. I also had some smokeless .44-40 too. Not only was the fun factor diminished by 75% but when I got home and cleaned the guns it was awful!!! How do you smokeless shooters put up with all that sticky, grimey dirty stuff. With BP cleanup is actually easier! One spritz of Murphy's mix and a couple of swabs then some Clenzoil and I'm good to go. I say SMOKELESS IS A BIT%^ to clean!!!!!! BP rules!!!!
Grizzly Dave Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 clean guns after shooting smokeless powder? Once every few months is about it.
Iron Pony Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 Been using smokeless for practice in the handguns, BBBBOOOORRRRIIIINNNNGGGG!!! The only advantage I can see is that can of bullseye will last me a heck of a long time with the charge used in the 44Specials. Have noticed a little sticky extraction in the opentops when using it compared to BP. Can report that the Mav D bullet shoots as well with bullseye as it does with Schutzen, no problems with the large amount of BP specific lube.
Cash Duckett Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 Two shoots a month, about 20-25 matches per year, you know the round count. I can (and do) shoot about 3 or 4 months before I clean any guns. Then it only takes an hour or less in front of the tv to get everything clean as new. I shot BP once, and spent almost that much time after one match! Call me names, but I'll stick to smokless. YMMV Cash
Noz Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 Long haired freaky person. How's that for calling you names? Had a good time Sat.

And the Angel Gabriel came forth sounding his trumpet and announced, hence forth only the fresh and smokeless breeze would be allowed in Paradise.
Yellowhouse Sam # 25171 Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 Smokeless is akin to the temptuous apple in the Garden of Eden.

Ryes you are trouble.. lol... I did shoot smokeless and I cleaned my guns after each shoot anyhow it was how I was raised.. lol... But I simply like the black, the fire, and the smell.. I feel like I am going back in time when I pull the trigger. It is hard to explain. There is nothing wrong with either one... we are all there to have fun and to do it our way... and my way is the dirty way... but hey I like the smell of a good cigar so my tastes are questionable.. lol

Rye Miles #13621 Posted July 13, 2011 Author Posted July 13, 2011 Hey, Ryes how are the knees?? Hay Deja thanks for askin, it's alot better than it was but it's not perfect. It's been almost 5 months and I still have a little pain but it's waaaay better than it was. I've been riding a bike, stationery and outside weather permitting. I also walk but I can't walk as far as I did without it getting sore. I lost 17 lbs. so that's helping too. I'm gonna go back to the sawbones and have it checked out. It's fun gettin old ain't it??? Riverboat Red, SASS #71733 Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 Last year I had some old smokieless rounds laying around so I decided to shoot them in a match. Pistol and rifle were fine, though a little weird. When I went to fire my shotgun though, I pull the trigger and nothing! Now, I don't hear my guns when I'm shooting so the lack of a big cloud of smoke obscuring the target made me pause for a moment. Well, I saw the plate fall (also weird) so I knew everything worked. I moved on to the next target and the rest of the match went OK. I learned I have certain expectations with my guns in a match. When things are really different, like no big cloud of smoke, it throws me a little. I learned my lesson, only real gunpowder from then on. Riverboat Red
