I  wonder what will happen when the finally realize the 6.8 is a real DOG.  Bad accuracy, terrible recoil, and after 200 meters won't penetrate the armor it was designed for.  Hopefully the plant will remain and make something useful.

I don’t know anything about the new military ammo. I do know that a new ammo plant in the USA is definitely a good thing.

Add very high throat and muzzle erosion issues.

the new military ammo has been performing well , there were design hurdles to be overcome but they are getting that all worked out , well enough to already be working on a civilian version 0f the round and the rifles that shoot it ,

this is a real departure from traditional ammo , it wont be shootable in what we already have ,

that new plant should aleviate some load from other factories that have not been producing our civilian ammo ,

Even if the 6.8 proves unsatisfactory, they can fairly quickly retool for a different round!

The fact that they built the plant speaks well!

Well, that will blow the prices on my stash of ammo right into the basement.  That was my retirement funds.

Seriously, I'm really glad that this is opening when it is.  Thanks, SIG!  Do it some more.

"The expansion is to enable SIG to supply the ammunition for their 6.8 Next Generation Squad Weapon military contracts. In fact, the facilities are building 6.8 in four varieties, from 6.8 GP (General Purpose) to the 6.8 blanks used in training. It also produces SIG ammo in 300 Winchester Magnum, 300 Norma Magnum, 338 Norma Magnum, and 6.5 Creedmoor, in addition to the various flavors of the NGSW."

Another problem that I didn't mention, due to the high pressure and high velocity they are finding in the field that barrels are lasting only about 1000-1200 rounds. When they shoot for training at my place before going down range it isn't unusual to fire 300+ rounds a day. A new barrel every 3-4 days??   STUPID !!

I read they lowered the pressure to around 70,000 psi for better accuracy and barrel life.

Im out of the loop did we adopt a new rifle or something? Why are they opening a new plant just to produce one caliber?

Think hard and you can find a use for all of that.  :o

NATO standard does not list AP but does list subsonic, soft core, and frangible for 7.62.  At least that’s what’s on the internet. Also on the internet is that anything the us uses becomes a de facto NATO standard.
