This is not real. This is actually a comic strip.

Four months ago 4-year-old April got out of the backyard and went down to the river to sail a toy boat. She fell in and almost drowned.

In today's trip daddy is going fishing and has taken April along. They're fishing on the pier, and April is wearing a life jacket, but as I was reading the strip I just got the feeling that April would be scared to death of all that water.

What y'all think? If this was real - IF THIS WAS REAL - would the little girl be traumatized from almost drowning and afraid to go anywhere near the water?

Could be, but on the other hand, perhaps not.

I know two guys who came close to drowning in adulthood. But they still went around water, just more carefully.

The magic word there is adulthood.

When I was 34 I was badly bitten by a dog. That dog ended up getting accidentally shot a few months later but that's irrelevant. I'm not afraid of dogs.

But I figure a four year old that got badly dog bit would probably be afraid of dogs.

This particular cartoon originally ran about 25 years ago.

Old people remember these things.

Many newspapers and cartoon sites have been re-running For Better or For Worse cartoon for quite a few years now since it ended in 2008. I started reading it in the early 80's and have been a fan since then. Yes, I'm reading the re-runs also.

In real life, I think April would scared of the water but I don't know to what extent her fear would run.

Charles Schulz ran out of ideas for Peanuts, so he started over.

There's a webcomic called girls with slingshots - ran for about 12 years. She's on her third run through.

And when this lady finished with for better or for worse she started running the strips over.

It was actually 30 years ago. 1994.

No way to tell really People respond to trauma differently. Both physical and mental.

+1 for this.  Different people react differently to things.  I also almost drowned when I was about 4 or 5.  Water never bothered me after that.  I boat, fish, sail, SCUBA dive, surf and just never developed any more fear of water than anyone else I know.  But, I know several people that had a traumatic experience that never really recovered from it and have a real fear of it happening again.

I recently bought a three volume hard back set of Gary Larson's entire Far Side collection.

It has a place on my shelf for Bill Mauldin's Up Front and Back Home cartoons.

She's a Canadian kid.

What else can I say?

When he was about 5, Big Red walked off the end of the dock one night when I was securing the boat for some expected bad weather..

I had to jump in and look for him, in the dark water, to pull him out as he was sinking with all his clothes on.

I gave him a big squeeze when I got him up and he belched out water.

His Mother, (Sherron) gasped and started to get upset when we walked back into the cottage, but I looked at her sternly and just said: :Daddy and Ian got wet! " and she caught my drift.

He didn't cry at all and slept through the night.

We weren't (visibly) upset so he just brushed it off.

He wanted to go swimming the next day.
