Bison gets another

Recommended Posts

Just saw on the weather channel an 83 year old woman was gored by a bison in Yellowstone. Does the bison get to count that as a full gore or can he only take partial credit because of her age ? Guess stupid people come in all age groups

The Bison didn't score many points as the so called "victim" was 83. All the other Bison will probably make fun of him for picking the weakest of the lot.

I guess wisdom sometimes doesn't come with age.

I wonder which bison has the current lead and if they have different categories like stampeding vs goring or head butting. Perhaps they rate it by how far they throw the tourists

Tell them not to pet them or go near them...

I have a feeling they could put it in sign language, morse code, and 50 different languages...And someone will still have head up there tail...

Raised on a farm,  I give domestic animals and even pets some caution.  Old Fido may be man's best friend but step on his foot when he's asleep and he may come up in full defense mode. No way give a wild animal any chance to get me. I see pure stupidity on social media. And people expect to be able to set their kid on a grizzly's back and take a picture.

Got a neighbor up in years hand milks cows. One morning a horse fly bet ol'Bossy and she side stepped and fell on my neighbor.  Smashed him pretty good.  But biggest damaged was being knocked back into the wall. Did serious damage to his neck and back.

The lead bison are the ones that keep trophies like the woman's jeans on his horn a year or so ago! Hope there's a video of the latest!

And never even think about getting close to the lone Bull , they are the ones that even the herd deems to aggressive and mean to stay with the herd, so they run him out.

What the Warden said.  You don't turn your back on domestic livestock.  My cousin was walking back from the barn after feeding and his "best horse" took a pretty good chunk out of his back.  Turn a "stranger" into a pasture with others of the kind and watch what happens.  Doesn't matter what the kind is.

When it comes to wildlife you are the stranger.

Japanese Tossed Salad

In the 1980’s my Wife mapped out a great adventure for the family. For the month of August we went west to explore some of Americas greatest sights from Arizona to South Dakota. Naturally one of these sights was Yellowstone Park. One of the best features of the park is the chance encounter with native wildlife. So as you drive through the park you learn to watch for signs of the local fauna and flora. One of the signs is a group cars parked along the side of the road. This usually indicates the presence of some interesting sight.

One day as we were driving along we spotted a large group of cars on both sides of the road. Upon further inspection we saw a small herd of Buffalo on a rise above the road. We stopped to take some pictures using a camera equipped with a telephoto lens. As we watched a group of 3-4 people began to approach the herd taking pictures as they went. To our eyes these people appeared to be oriental. Several people began yelling at them to stop, which they ignored, perhaps they did not understand.

As the group got closer to the herd, suddenly several of largest buffs turned to face the tourists standing shoulder to shoulder prepared to defend the herd from interlopers. At this point the tourists wisely began to retreat. Also at this point my oldest son, about 10 years of age, said, “Watch this Japanese tossed salad”. No one was injured in this incident, however, it is a family story often repeated.

The ONLY place I know of where you could pet a buffalo is from a train that takes tourists around the ranch's herd up on the Colorado/Wyoming border, along I-25. (Can't recall the name of the place.) They will take you our and these fairly tame buffs will come up to the sides of the open cars, and you can feed them cakes and reach out and touch their heads. OTOH, they once had a lone bull that went through one of their "buffalo-proof" fences, and I don't recall what they did about him. But that is the ONLY place I would get that close to a buff!

Critters are NOT pets!  Speaking of what can happen...years ago I was talking to a park ranger from Yellowstone who related an incident. Seems two idiots driving a fiberglass bodied sports car thought it was the height of hilarity to drive up real close to a bear that wasn't looking and hit the horn! They did this to a black bear and scared the poor thing so it ran off.  These morons then did the same thing to a griz. When they hit the horn, the griz, which had its back to them, went straight up in the air, whirled around, and brought both forepaw with those claws down on the hood of the car and scratched down on the fiberglass surface. The he turned around and walked slowly away.  The ranger who witnessed this was laughing so hard he nearly injured himself.  Considering the damage done to the car and what it cost, even back then, to fix it, the ranger figured they'd been "fined" enough!

Maybe the buff was a senior citizen, too, and just too played out to stomp a younger human idiot.

You are referring to https://terrybisonranch.com/. We stayed there a couple of years ago when we attended the HOW match in Cheyenne, WY.
