How to make it last longer

Recommended Posts

Who else squeezes the tubes of toothpaste, after shave balm, etc. and then cuts them to use what can't be accessed?
It's really surprising the amount of product that would otherwise get wasted.

Never went that far! Seems like a lot of work for a couple more brushes but whatever floats your boat!

More philosophy from the Great Depression of the 1930s:

"Use it up or wear it out.

Make it do or do without."

I don't cut the tube, I just crush the hell out of it.

My grandmother said that little rhyme to me a couple of times when I was a kid. Thanks for triggering those memories. I loved my Nanny dearly.

I thought during Covid and “The Silliness” that a saying like this might become a reality or necessity, but mostly what I recall was a level of whining never before seen or heard.
It’s still going on.

In the spirit of Military “Defense Condition” = DefCon. I have created a similar numbering system for WhinCon = Whining Condition.
Using DefCon’s numbering 5 is lowest. Peace is everywhere. There are no threats. 1, however is bad…really bad. All hell’s breaking loose.

There is an instructional exercise that will show you EXACTLY how it is, when times are tough:
Drop the Main breaker on your house panel.
Figure it out from there.

The Great Depression happened before REA brought power to rural areas.
They dealt with zero power every day of their lives.
We are not so lucky.

Food spoilage (no ice house), no drugs, no heat (unless wood), no hot water (unless wood stove), no food (unless a farm), etc.

I remember the foil toothpaste tubes. You could buy a “key” where you slipped it over the end of the tube and rolled it up from the bottom. You could also use your toothbrush handle to flatten the tube on the counter.

But… is it worth nine bucks to you

this reminds me of an online disussion, back in the mid-eighties. there was a discusssion of something in The Tightwad Gazette. I recall impressing everyone with my dedication to the cause when I asked to borrow old copies.

sellers on ebay claim to have copies of the old issues

Oh, make TOOTHPASTE last longer.

I use salt and baking soda for the first brushing and dab of Sensodine to get the taste out of my mouth.  A tube of toothpaste lasts me about four months.  I'm not about to waste my time on the itsy bitsy gob of toothpaste left when it's gone.

They were made of tin. Throw them in the lead pot.

So of course they started making them from plastic.

It's a conspiracy - a conspiracy I tell you.

We used Abilene Slim's method, only instead of flattening with the toothbrush handle, we'd use the back of our closed pocket knife.

My wife squeezes the tube from the middle ... I am forever flattening it from the bottom up.

I was raised a tightwad, I reckon!
