Powder coated bullets ?

I have a naive question about Powder Coated Bullets .

I have been exclusively shooting BP & BP Substitutes for the last ten years now .

So I have been casting and lubeing my own bullets to do it with .

In the last few years this smokeless powder fad & Powder coated bullets have gotten bigger and bigger .

So my question is ?

Can I use Powder coated bullets with Real Black powder  & or Substitute Black Powder  ?

I just tried sum powder coated bullets with Unique and I liked it well enough,  So it got me to thing about the dark side ?

Thank you in advance.

You can’t use them with real BP unless you add a compatible lube. The lube is what keeps the fouling soft.

You can use them with APP because APP makes its own lube and you supposedly do not need any lube, even with bare bullets.

With real BP I’d suggest you use plain lead bullets with a soft lube.

I don't buy bullets.

I just make what ever I need at that time .

I just did not see how powder coated  bullets was going to work with real BP .

I figured they would work just fine with APP.

Thank you .

I tried coated bullets in my 1873 Springfield musket and the results were terrable.  After about the 3rd bullet I had a great deal of trouble getting them down the barrle.

Hy Ya Rooster :)

Back to yer original question:  NO.  Coated bullets DO NOT play well with BP.

BIG PLUS ONE for Sam Sackett.  BP lube is required regardless when shooting BP.

I just shot the Texas State Black Powder match this past weekend using bulletboss.com coated bullets using BlackMZ. I know a number of cowboys that shot APP using the same bullets from them without any issue.

Well of course you didn't have any problems with Black MZ and no problems with APP.  Both are the same formulation, make their own lubricant and play quite well with coated bullets.  Or bullets without coats, just sweaters.  Or Nude.  Tiz the way it works.  :D

Actually, the rounds he was using...assuming he got them from a friend of ours (we use the same "formula"), is 777 in the rifle and fffg BP in the revolvers.

All rounds use Bullet Boss 125gr Hi-Tek coated bullets.

Hey Phantom, nope, I actually did them myself after WK sold me a pound of the BlackMZ. I used 1.3 cc of BlackMZ with my 125 grain BulletBoss lead. He did make my shotgun shells and said they were real black. Glad you were able to come down and join us. Even though I ended up with a MDQ on the last gun on the last stage. I guess if you are gonna get one that is the way to do it so you get to shoot the whole match. LOL

Clarification - powder coating is for metals and generally contains large amounts of silica. The coating you want for bullets is POLYMER and contains no silica. Hi-Tek is the most common however, there are others.

Hugs!
