Alpo Posted July 26, 2024 Posted July 26, 2024 (edited) That was a serious question, people. "No normal man LIT a naked flame in a Spitfire cockpit." Why not? There had to be a reason. Edited July 26, 2024 by Alpo DAMN otto TO H E DOUBLE HOCKEY STICKS!!!! Quote

Just about all fighters of that era had fumes of avgas, lubricants, and hydraulic fluids the cockpit. Add in the extra O2 and you have a situation where an open flame might not be conducive to a long and happy life. 3 1 Quote
Alpo Posted July 26, 2024 Posted July 26, 2024 In one of THE CORPS books - pretty sure it was one of the last two, taking place in Korea, not WW2 - Pick and Little Billy are flying along in their Corsairs. Billy notices that Pick has slid back his canopy, pushed up his goggles, taken the cockpit lighter (officially known as a "spot heater") and started up a long black cigar, and is casually flying along smoking. Which is completely against regulations. And I wondered why a fighter plane would have a onboard cigarette lighter, and I wondered why it would be against regulations to smoke in the cockpit. Wondered this for almost 2 minutes. And then I continued on reading the book. Now I know why it would be against regulations to smoke in the cockpit. Still don't understand why they would have a cigarette lighter aboard. "Spot heater"?? Quote
Alpo Posted July 27, 2024 Posted July 27, 2024 (edited) Interesting. When I downloaded it it had a caption. Something about Chuck Norris bumping his shin on a trailer hitch. I wonder where the caption went? I wonder if otto had anything to do with it? Edited July 27, 2024 by Alpo 5 Quote

Ozark Huckleberry Posted July 27, 2024 Posted July 27, 2024 I recently spent $6,500 on this registered Black Angus bull. I put him out with the herd but he just ate grass and wouldn't even look at a cow. I was beginning to think I had paid more for that bull than he was worth. Anyway... I had the Vet come and take a look at him. He said, the bull was very healthy, but possibly just a little young, so he gave me some pills to feed him once per day. The bull started to service the cows within two days… all my cows! He even broke through the fence and bred with all of my neighbor's cows! He's like a machine! I don't know what was in the pills the Vet gave him ... but they kind of taste like peppermint. 5 Quote

I know it was a lot different when they started flying higher and had pressurized cockpits, but the F4 had ashtrays in the cockpit and I'm sure other planes did too. I also know the pilots would use a lot more 100% oxygen when they were hung over. 2 Quote
