Left click and hold on each photo, then drag your mouse gently from left to right on the original photograph and it will slowly become a photo of the exact same location and view today - drag it back to the left and you are back in 1944!

Incredible. It was humbling to be able to visit some of the WWII sites in Normandy and Belgium this past June. This is an awesome persprctive.

Dad may have been able to recognize some of those places. He went in D+3 and was in an Engineering battalion. He may have blown holes in some of the buildings. They learned not to go through the front door when clearing a building.

It amazes me that, in places all blasted to hell 70+ years ago, how many building are still standing and in use today.

 

My home town, which hasn't seen any fighting since the 1870s has about five original buildings left. Everything has been replaced by brand name, big box, giant stores and malls, condos, new college buildings, wide streets, and square miles of houses.

They built out of rock and then put slate roofs on their buildings. Makes for a very durable structure.

 

We build houses with particle board siding and 15 year asphalt shingle roofs. Not so durable.
