Howdy,

What would a $200 fine mean to anyone with that income?

For some folks $200 is a disaster.

If it was me, I would be considering other places to live.

Or, just get a driver and not worry about it at all......

What I get a kick out of is the RED LIGHT FINES in Chicago.

Word is the mayor is a big backer of this BUT his crew regularly blows

thru red lights. I guess its safe if you are mayor?

Best

Not speed?! What's the fun in that?

The fun is you don't leave a grieving family. I consider that a benefit.

Don't speed is a good answer if the speed limit is reasonable, it frequntly isn't. Mostly speeding fines or add ons are for revenue not safety. Here in Georgia if you are 15 or more over the limit that is a $600 add on and was added a few years ago to raise money. The problem is that large sections of interstate are set artificially low and the state rakes in the cash on those they catch. I can tell you from personal experience that almost all the traffic on I285 is running 75 or better most of the day. The only time the cops are pulling over folks is when they need to meet whatever quota has been set for them.

My 2¢ (or 30,000¢ if you are paying the $600 add on)

How exactly is it they know how much money you make or have?

They probaly have a data base, like the IRS.

Have friends from Finland. If you make over a certain amount (used to be about $100,000), your tax rate went over 50%. When it got really high (over $1m), it reached 90%. The speeder was correct to note that high income individuals are being chased from the country due to taxes.

Speed limits are the law. No different than stealing or ignoring the Constitution.

That is an observation I made when the US went to 55 mph speed limits on the national level. They can't catch everybody was my take away on that. I believe that one law made more of us criminals than any other. Plus we discovered other things that we had been lawful enough to obey. Much the same as using the outlawed green tip ammo. I guess there are outlaws and lawmen.

Actually, one minor point is that speed limits are not technically laws, but regulations. That's why the penalties are civil fines not incarceration. Speeding does not give you a criminal record.

"Regulations" are the bane of our society. While speed limits are necessary, the process can be abused, and fequently is, like so many government regulations!
