Chorro Valley/Western Regional

Recommended Posts

Just got back to Phoenix from the 600 mile drive to Chorro Valley (just five miles north of San Luis Obispo, Ca.). This was their 19th annual Chorro Valley shoot AND their first hosting of the Western Regional. TERRIFIC match, The guys and gals from Chorro did a great job. Fun side matches, four warm-up matches (so everyone could find the time to shoot one), a Wild Bunch match, beautiful props and twelve great main match stages. They had just over 300 shooters for their first Western Regional and capped the whole thing off with a catered prime rib dinner. No paper plates and plastic forks, real cockery plates and silverware! The weather was unbelievable, at least for us people from Arizona, sunny and 70 to 73 every day. Chorro Valley is just five miles from Moro Bay and the Pacific ocean and the morning sea mist keeps everything cool and tolerable. They also had twenty-one fantastic vendors selling gun parts, custom boots, custom clothes, hats and everything needed for the cowboys and cowgirls attending the match. I've got this shoot on my list for next year and plan to get my application in early. Once word gets out on the beautiful weather, great facilities and terrific and friendly people that put on this match their shooter numbers are going to rise next year. YEEHAA!!!

Another one in the books! Had a great posse to shoot with that included Larsen and Dan Diamond and got to visit with a bunch of great people! A lot of work goes into putting on matches like this, now it starts all over for next year....yeeehaaa!

I haven't shot the Chorro Valley Annual since the late 90's when it was still the John Wayne Shootout. I'm sure glad I came with Jack Rojas, Howdy Doody, Wimpy Yoho, and brought the Dammit Gang with us. I heard no complaints about organization, stages, or the food so that means the Western Regional was a hit. Glad to have been a part of it.

Larsen, you were a hoot to shoot with and of course my pals Mad Dog Jack and Howdy Doody are always a blast to posse with. Mad Dog McCoy led our merry troop along smoothly and we had the prettiest gals and some of the best pards along for the match.

Thanks to the men and wimmin' of Chorro Valley for a great time.

Absolutely the finest match I have ever been too! Chorro Valley is one club that knows how to do things right.

Posse 21 was the best. I got to shoot with Black Harris (who said I didn't look ANYTHING like my avatar). And it took me two days to realize that wasn't his hair! Posse leader was Coffee who has to be one....IS.....the nicest feller you can have leading a posse.

So now that it's Monday morning, and the shoot's been over for almost 18 hours, why no application on-line yet for next year? Come on....get with it....!!!.... ;)

Folks, that was a great time with some fine folks and they can hold this match up as the one to set the bar at. I have been to more than a few annuals and the way this ran so smooth and with so many perks (like prime rib and shrimp on china, with silver) and way too much to mention here. All I can say is if you missed this one, then I am sorry, but try to do it next year. Dammit, Those Chorro Regulator folks are the absolute best. Everyone I talked with said they were having a fantastic time and about how not one detail had been forgotten or left out. The hard work that club did sure showed, thank you for a great match pards. I had a blast, literally. :)

Whew! It's on the Books now! Thank you everyone for the wonderful words regarding the Western Regional. Made all the hours of 'prep' worthwhile! The Ladies and I followed the Shoot in the Score Shack....we cheered when ya done good an' sighed when you had a 'miss'...or two!

Must thank the Ladies who helped keep the Scoring Result Process so fluid! 'Mae B. Knotte', our 'Score Sheet Runner' for both Friday AND Saturday ALL DAY! And, Kathie Sperow who along with 'Pistol Packin' Pancha', kept me honest.....HONESTLY, we refused all bribes ;) !!!!!

Already gearing up mentally for next years Regional! Bring on the 'Score Sheets'!

A really great shoot, fantastic posse (21) and a great group of cowboys that put on the match.

Just a caution, have someone keep an eye on your dinner table when you go to get your food, you just might find you are dining in the middle of the dance floor!

That match was outstanding! What a great time with great people. On posse 20 I was fortunate enough to be shooting with Penny Pepperbox and her husband and posse leader Lash Latigo. Penny sure has a firecracker personality and put a spark in our posse and kept it fun. Congrats to her winning it all. Congrats also to El Lazo in getting the Chorro Valley Regulators yearly award. Kudos to all at CVR on putting together this fine match. I shall return!

Waaayyy too much fun!!! Soooo much hard work to make it all happen to perfection. Many, many thanks to all those that made it happen. Your hard work showed through in spades.

Lucky posse 13...

  • NINE broken guns...three of them twice!! (plus another broke on Sunday during the team shoot) Can anyone top that?? Must be a record!
  • Tea time after our third stage each day (pinky salute to our own Brit UK Dane)!!
  • Like a chia pet, we watched Warthog Red grow an incredible brushy mustache.
  • Four shooters had tardies placed in their permanent record.
  • Spirit of the Game to Hoss MacBride who worked the posse even though his broken ribs wouldn't let him shoot.
  • Millions of laughs!!

Met lots of new friends and a couple of stalkers. (You know who you are! :P ) Hats off to all!!

Hello,

I am very sad about one thing only, I JUST DISCOVERED THIS MATCH LAST YEAR! This year was even better in almost every way.

I  my posse/PM, the match directors, the food, the vendors (I bought an Emma Star hat from Buckaroo Bobbins and ordered Earthwalkers, in an effort to support them ;) ), all of the folks I got to hang out with, my group at awards (all four of them  ), the folks who were so nice to my sister-in-law (especially you, Eamon Chute), the people (Lusty Lil and the gentlemen) who were brave enough to dance with me (I did not cause any of them hit the floor...), the Friday night Domino Gang (ROTFL... over Six Packin' Jan's insults, which were mostly directed at me), Shotboy (Gil T. Azell) who brought the Domino Gang shots, eating at Dockside 3 three times (I even got the last meal comped without asking because it was terrible, tough, and overcooked; and the replacement came so late; but, Hubby, Mr. Picky, even liked the day-old reheated Tuna) ...I could go on and on; but, I think you get it that I had a great time with great people.

I have my parking spot for next year.

Regards,

I have to agree with all the positive posts.

It was definitely a "Championship" caliber match!!!

It even had some championship shooters to watch.

And who knew, that in order to actually PLAY dominoes, one would have to know SOOOOOOOO much about sewing and dress patterns. Honestly, I didn't! The things you learn at a big shoot.

It might not be normal for vendors to comment on matches, but I wanted to add my kudos for a great event from a vendor perspective. My only regret was that it's not practical for me to shoot large matches while vending...and this match is at the top of my list for ones I'd like to shoot. It was great for myself and White Wolf Woman to renew acquaintances with old friends and customers. This is a great group of people, and are the reason I love this sport so much. We did good business, which helps, but primarily we return to Chorro Valley every year for many other reasons...as Larson so ably spelled out. This match and Winter Range are two matches I tell everyone to get to. 5 Dogs is always fun, too. Many thanks to Incorrigible and Sinful and everyone else who worked so hard to pull of a great event. what a hard working bunch!
