Jabez Cowboy,SASS # 50129 Posted January 29 Posted January 29 That Shy,,, Eh? I drove train for a little over 8 years, for C.P.R. (Canadian Pacific Railway) I have seen a wreck or two ... In broad day light two ladies Drove right into the middle of the train I was driving, The train was a little over 1.5 miles long and they hit about dead center... Both were killed, the train was doing 55 MPH. the car was dragged 173 meters before breaking free of the train, and ending up in a ditch on it's roof. It took me just short of a mile to get the train stopped. What a mess... Jabez Cowboy 1 2 Quote
Blackwater 53393 Posted January 29 Author Posted January 29 Nothing shy or subtle about a train wreck!! Trip to the foot doctor this morning, really early!! Still in the boot for another week and using the scooter, but no drainage or bleeding and the incision is almost invisible. I’m going to the range for a visit on Saturday. I won’t be shooting, but I can visit with my pards and I need to pick up a small batch of ammo. Me ‘n’ Schoolmarm ran some errands when I got out of the doc’s office and I had a nice sit down breakfast at a local restaurant that we enjoy frequently. Not too bad a day so far, but I ain’t walkin’ yet!! GRUMP! DAMMUTT!! 4 Quote

I do have an instant GRUMP reflex!! I don’t handle stupid well at all and I refuse to suffer fools gladly!! Blackwater 53393 Posted February 6 Author Posted February 6 Long day, yesterday! Foot doc at 7:45 and then to the boot repair to drop off some moccasins for alterations. Back home before 10:00 and then out for groceries. I actually did some of the shopping myself!! Schoolmarm hates to do the shopping all at once and doesn’t care much for my lists. I took a big Federal ammo sack and hung it on the handlebars of that damned scooter and I picked up stuff that she doesn’t think about that makes living and especially meals more enjoyable!! Surprised the heck out of her and inflated the grocery bill a little, but we won’t hafta make so many special trips to get “that one thing” that’ll add to the pleasure level!! Finally, I spent a couple of hours putting things away and straightening up around the kitchen. About dark:35, I was ready for a long nap, but she was serving up supper and I was hongry! I lasted ‘til 8:30 last night and I turned in. Be dipped if I didn’t wake up every two hours all night long and didn’t sleep worth two dead flies!! Gotta fix the fill valve on a toilet and there’s laundry to do and the trash truck runs tomorrow! Ain’t no rest for the wicked or the weary! GET YER FEET BACK ON THE STREET!! GRUMP!!! 1 1 Quote

Home health care removed the scab on Monday and it bled a little between then and yesterday morning, but it was .5mm and dry when the doc checked it. I don’t go back for two weeks. Blackwater 53393 Posted February 9 Author Posted February 9 (edited) Spent most of Friday cleaning up and straightening up in the shop! Since I have been laid up so much of the last more than a year, things have accumulated and cleanup has NOT been a priority! The oldest grandson came over and I stumped out to the shop and we went to work! All of the trash cans were emptied and bagged up. We broke down all the cardboard and packaging and filled two large boxes with that. There was literally a half ton of scrap metal and used up car parts in barrels and stacked up to the point of tumbling out onto the floor. We swept and bagged up everything that was baggable and set it aside. I brought Ol’ Green in and we loaded scrap metal and car parts, then put trash bags and cardboard, as well as a bundle of styrofoam on top of that. By that time it was too late to make the run to the dump, so we shut it down for the night. Next morning, Bryce came back and we threw the last four bags of stuff on the truck and made one last sweep of the shop. I told him that I could just feel that there was one more brake rotor in there somewhere. We both laughed. We had probably loaded fifty or more from stacks and barrels already, but sure enough, “Brake rotor sighted!” he hollered and we both laughed again ‘til it hurt! We hauled it all off and got rid of it, stopped off for a late breakfast, and we were back to the shop by noon! We just hung out for most of the afternoon and snacked and carried on! It was a productive and fun couple of days! Now, I’m sitting on my backside, watching old western movies and thinking how much better it was to be out there getting something done!! It’s turned off cold for the next few days and I still have to take it easier than I want to, so I guess I’m doing what I should. But I don’t have to like it!! GET THE HELL OFF THE LAWN!! Blackwater 53393 Posted February 10 Author Posted February 10 (edited) My folks had cats. I was pretty ambivalent about them most of the time. We inherited a cat when Schoolmarm and I got married. It mostly lived outside and finally moved away. I don’t want them in my house and particularly in my shop! The occasional itinerant cat wandering through will stay around outside until it has eliminated the rodent population and then moves on. My Dalmatians were far better mousers than any cat I have known. On a separate note! The home health nurse came by to check on my foot a few minutes ago! Despite my extra, unsanctioned activities over the weekend, it is in better shape than before the weekend and there was no bleeding or drainage at all when the bandage was removed!! DAMN!! I should’a done more and sat on my butt less!! ONE GRUMP FOR THE MISSED OPPORTUNITY!! Edited February 10 by Blackwater 53393 4 Quote

Jabez Cowboy Even very capable semi feral cats do not have a long life here. An indoor cat, in the country is a good idea because mice never quit. Otherwise, out here, the only answer is Barn cats. They are not pets though you do give some support, so there is no emotional factor when inevitably they are killed and eaten, they replace themselves. When my wife gets ponies, necessary (to her) for pending grandchildren, and the horses needed for adults to keep up and supervise, I will have Barn Cats to keep the rodents down. 1 Quote
Whitey James Posted February 11 Posted February 11 (edited) Always been a dog owner and never much cared for cats.....Until...Two winters ago I pulled up in my truck on a rainy night and was running for the front door and heard this tiny little kitten crying and running after me soaking wet. have no idea where she came from. I dried her off and put a little of our dog kibble out for her because she looked so pitiful. I ended up buying her an outdoor cat shelter that sat on the front porch. I am allergic to cats and the wife is highly allergic so bringing her in was not an option (plus my pitbull would eat her as a snack). ended up getting her spayed though a free community cats program. She is the best cat! she does not destroy anything and occasionally I get a gift of a dead mole on the front porch. She hangs out with me when I'm working outside. Cold Lake Kid, SASS # 51474 Posted February 12 Posted February 12 We had to cancel our "Winter Camp" match this Saturday. The main Man had eye surgery and we are scheduled for a major snowfall; 30 to 40 Cm by Saturday, so we'll have to do some digging out. Thank goodness we have a front end loader and a snow blower. Lefty, our Security Guard, shown here, a few years ago, half drunk and trying to sober up, has been useless in working around the site. He was originally hired to work around the ranch site doing general building maintenance and repairs, cutting firewood etc. but his age and other informalities have prevented that. He does help out on match days. We suspect he has a still around somewhere as there has been rumours of something called "Leftys Likker". Grump on. 2 Quote

Blackwater 53393 Posted February 12 Author Posted February 12 The good! Schoolmarm’s oncology visit was superb! All numbers in acceptable levels and approaching 10 years cancer free! More good! Home health nurse just finished her visit and the foot had no bleeding or drainage. We could have reused the bandages and it looks really good! Better! Had a nice lunch that featured a large Chef’s Salad with Nashville hot chicken added. DEEELICIOUS!! The BAD!! Coming out of the grocery after checkout, the front wheel on the damned scooter caught on some unseen something or other and tossed my big ass on the ground in the middle of the parking lot!! No real damage. A minor abrasion on my other knee, ( the bad foot is on the good leg. The bad knee is on the leg that has the good foot!😡) and a very short moment of embarrassment and extreme anger! Now I’m just annoyed with Hatfield and Schoolmarm for fussin’ over me!! It’s nasty and rainy outside and I’m not amused! The yard is flooded and more rain on the way!! Get Off The Lawn! AND STAY OFF!! 2 1 Quote

Cold Lake Kid, SASS # 51474 Posted February 13 Posted February 13 I'm well and truly drifted in around the house. Big Red and I cleared some of the driveway so he could get out, but the plows haven't been by yet, so the rest can wait until they pass. Vents had to be looked at to ensure they were not blocked with drift snow. Gas furnace and On-Demand gas water heater, so the air intakes and exhausts are only a couple of feet off the ground. Now the knees are talking to me. Well whining more like. And another 15 to 20 cm still to come! And the dang wind can't make up it's mind which way it's coming from; First from the North, then turns South or whirls around and blows powder snow in my face no matter which way I direct the chute. Big Red and I looked like a couple of snow men when we got back in and we only did 1/2 the width of the drive, so he could get out to work. GRUMP. Now where's my coffee? 2 1 Quote

Blackwater 53393 Posted February 14 Author Posted February 14 I had a better than average day today! I did almost 15 minutes on my stationary bike this morning! Did eleven minutes yesterday! My flop yesterday didn’t do much damage. A skint knee, a little soreness in the residual, and not much else overnight. I slept pretty well in spurts. As I was wrapping up my evening last night, an old friend crossed my mind that I hadn’t heard from in several years. He’d lost his only son in a tragic circumstance and never fully recovered. We had not spoken since then, mainly because his drunken sister had phoned me after the boy was killed and ranted and raved about something she had no knowledge of and told me to never contact him again! I sent word to him then, but got no reply and only got news of him second hand from mutual friends. He knew how I felt, but we never spoke again. I looked him up last night to see if he was still at the same place and was greeted with his obituary. He’d passed last spring and I hadn’t heard. Kind of bummed out today! We rode many a mile together over many years! A half-hearted grump this evening. 😞 3 Quote

The last time I was able to use it, I was up to 30 minutes, twice a day and that’s where I intend to be again as soon as possible. I’m planning on being able to shoot a match by the middle of next month. I have to improve my stamina and balance. My equilibrium is pretty good but I’m leaning to walk again for the sixth or seventh time and so my footwork is out of whack and it makes me unsteady. If I can get those two issues corrected, it’ll make me feel better about handling live firearms! I’d like to be able to get by without the cane when I’m on the line. 1 Quote
